Martin Woods scored and played a pivotal part in FC Halifax Town’s victory over Altrincham yesterday afternoon, and the midfielder spoke to ShaymenTV after the game.

Woods began speaking to ShaymenTV by giving his assessment of the game; “Fair play to Altrincham they passed the ball well and played good stuff to get up the park, but our boys dug in and it was all about getting the’ win’ mentality. We’ll take a win anyway it comes.”

The midfielder then added what was said at half time when Town went in with a narrow winning margin of 2-1.

“We just spoke about getting us further up the park a little bit, but I think that was the kind of the way Altrincham played, they did take control of the ball at times. But we had a lot of bodies missing, especially up front and we had boys playing there who don’t normally play there.

“So, that normally gets you up the park when there is a player there who holds the ball. Although, we dug in and got the win, so we don’t mind how the win comes.”

Early into the second half and the Shaymen did make it 3-1, with Woods scoring a brilliant goal. He spoke about the goal, saying; “Greeny (Kieran Green) did well on the left side and broke into the box, and he said he heard my big loud Scottish accent and then he just laid it off for me and I finished into the goal.

“I’m delighted as I’ve been waiting for one of those for a little while. I’ve had a couple of cutbacks in the last few games and they’ve just fallen in between my right and left foot, so this today was lovely – delighted to get the goal.”

The Shaymen are now in the play-off places, and Woods spoke on this, saying; “I think with the boys that are in there and with a fully fit squad – we have a lot of good players. I think we’ve played against the majority of the teams now, and I don’t think there’s anything to fear for the boys, we’ve pushed the boat for maximum points in the majority of the games we’ve played.

“We’ve just got to keep pushing forward and I think there’s still more to come from us and hopefully we can finish higher than where we already are.”

Lastly, the Shaymen’s next game is on January 2nd – hosting Hartlepool United, the game comes one day after Martin’s birthday – so the question beckoned; is Woods hopeful of a birthday win?

“Yeah, I will be hoping for a birthday win, I won’t tell you how old I’m turning because we don’t celebrate them when you’re kicking on a bit. But I am hopeful because we beat them in the cup, and they beat us in the league – which was a game that could’ve gone either way. So, we’re looking to get maximum points for my birthday!”
