FC Halifax Town bowed out of the FA Cup in the 4th Qualifying Round with a 2-0 defeat away at South Shields.

Darius Osei header and Robert Briggs strike were the difference between the two sides and South Shields will go into the FA Cup 1st Round draw on Monday night.

Town started on front foot, Jeff King’s cross was cut out only to Martin Woods who went for a volley but never caught it and the effort was not troubling Myles Boney.

Darius Osei went down the right-hand side, past Clarke and won the first corner of the game. Taken short and Williams was able to clear.

The home side thought they had taken the lead with a lovely move on the 11th minute. Osei down the left-hand side, got his cross in and it was blocked on the line and out for a corner on the far side. The resulting corner was cleared again, back towards Sam Johnson’s goal, the effort took a couple of deflections and out for a goal kick.

Osei was proving to be a handful turning on the edge of the box and winning a corner off Clarke for a 15th minute corner, Omotayo heading away Robert Briggs set piece. A good run by Alexander Kempster drawing a couple of chances, he laid back to Callum Ross, but his shot was always rising and over Johnson’s bar.

A challenge in midfield on Jack Earing looked to be a foul but not given, Darius Osei was able to run at the Town defence, he found Briggs, cross into the box was tapped home by Jason Gilchrist but an offside flag came to the Shaymen’s rescue and silenced the South Shields fans.

Alexander Kempster’s ball into the box met by Jason Gilchrist and his effort was saved by Johnson, it then appeared to be handled in the box. The loud appeals in the stands did not affect the referee Andrew Miller and no penalty was given.

The home side did take the lead on 38 minutes, good play down the right-hand side, cross in from Gilchrist was over everyone. The ball was kept in at the corner flag and from the resulting cross, a header from Osei was a deserved opening goal.

A South Shields cross from the right-hand side found Kempster at the far post and his hooked effort was cleared over our own bar for a corner as the home fans wanted a second goal that their pressure was demanding.

Town looked to equalise through a corner by Martin Woods met by Niall Maher and his header hit the post, out for another corner. Cleared to King, back out to Woods and his cross was out for a goal kick.

Wild made no changes at the break and Town nearly equalised within the first minute. King’s ball into the box was met by Omotayo and his first touch saw his effort go over the bar.

Kieran Green’s cross was met by Danny Williams and his effort whistled past the wrong side of the post as Town looked to find a way back into the game.

Woods brought down Osei after he lost the ball at the edge of the box. A freekick taken too quickly for the referee and was brought back. Johnson was able to claim the cross into the box.

An effort from 25 yards from Woods was saved by Boney, then South Shields down the other end and Osei was inches wide of the target.

Jake Hyde replaced Gold Omatayo on 65 minutes along with Jack Hindle replacing Jason Gilchrist for the home side.

Good play from Briggs laid into the path of Jordan Hunter and the opportunity opened for the South Shields man but fired over the bar.

However South Shields were not to be denied a second on 71 minutes they doubled their lead. A throw on the near side to Briggs and he fired past Johnson into the bottom corner.

Jack Hindle had the ball in the net again, but his effort was ruled out for handball after he controlled the ball in the box.

King’s cross into the box looked for Hyde and his effort was deflected wide for a corner on the far side, the corner into the box from Woods was cleared.

South Shields will go into the hat for Monday night’s 1st round draw
