FC Halifax Town were defeated 2-0 at the hands of Woking this afternoon. Goals from Max Kretzschmar and Jake Hyde set The Cardinals on their way at The Shay Stadium.
It took Woking fifteen minutes to open the scoring, after Max Kretzschmar was played the ball into the box, but was nudged down to the ground by Nathan Clarke. Joe Hull pointed straight to the spot to give a penalty kick.
Kretzschmar picked himself up to take the penalty and shot left of the goal. Sam Johnson got a hand to the ball but couldn’t do enough as the shot went into the corner of the goal – putting The Cardinals a goal ahead.
After thirty minutes, the score remained 1-0 to the visitors, however, the proceedings were largely even – regardless of Woking being on the front foot score line wise.
On the 40th minute mark, Devante Rodney made a good run into the box after receiving a ball from Charlie Cooper. Rodney turned Moussa Diarra in and out before shooting on target – the ball was blocked by Ben Gerring and wide.
Town had another good chance a minute or so later when Danny Williams raced down the left flank before playing a cross into the box. Josh Staunton was at the end of the cross as he flicked an effort into Craig Ross’ grasp.
The final five minutes of the half were the best phase of the forty-five. Woking countered Town’s efforts, with Sam Johnson being tested with one chance, but making a good save. Ben Dempsey later fired a shot over the bar.
However, after these two opportunities, Woking did manage to double their advantage on the 44th minute. A ball over the top was met by Diarra who headed the ball down to striker Jake Hyde, Hyde fired the effort into the bottom corner of the goal inside the box.
Woking began the second half on the front foot, creating good passing routes in the Halifax defensive area. Although, Town’s usual robust defence was on show to stop The Cardinals adding to their lead.
Town came very close to halving the score on the hour mark, an in-swinging corner was met by Nathan Clarke who headed the ball across the box. Rodney met the ball with a header which struck the bar onto the line, but Woking managed to clear.
The hour mark also showcased Pete Wild’s first change, as he introduced Cameron King and Liam Nolan to the game, in place of Jack Redshaw and Staunton.
There were over twenty fouls in the game, but only three bookings were given, one of those was to Woking’s Hyde. Hyde was played in on goal but was deemed to control the ball with his hand before firing a shot at goal.
Johnson made a delightful save from close-range, however, play was pulled back to award Hyde a booking for the handball in the build-up to the shot.
Wild rolled the dice for his third and final change ten minutes from time, when he introduced Tobi Sho-Silva to the game for Charlie Cooper.
As the game got into its business end, neither side could firmly get a grip of possession, which led neither adding to the score line. Woking took all three points back to Surrey after goals from Kretzschmar and Hyde.
