FC Halifax Town were beaten 5-0 by Bromley in the Vanarama National League on Saturday afternoon, where five secondhalf goals gave Town their worst result of the season.

A tense first half completely contrasted with the second at Hayes Lane, as Town’s left-back Jerome Binnom-Williams saw red for a second bookable offence and the hosts let loose to secure maximum points.

The game got off to a slow start, as few clear chances were created. A speculative effort from Niall Maher looped wide of the net before a low ball from Jamie Allen went fell just behind Tobi Sho-Silva, denying the striker a chance at goal.

It wasn’t until the 39thΒ minute that any real action happened. Bromley won a free kick 40 yards out, it went short, and after a few good passes Reeco Hackett-Fairchild had a crack which came back off the bar.

Just before the half-time break Bromley thought they had won a penalty. A freekick was fired in from Luke Coulson, and in the ensuring action a Bromley man went down in the box, but the referee wasn’t interested.

The game changed dramatically after the interval, as Bromley took the lead just six minutes into the new period. Following a couple of corners, the hosts took advantage as the ball fell to Mekki on the edge of the area – the number 11 struck into the bottom-right corner.

Bromley doubled their lead seven minutes later from another corner, as Hackett-Fairchild did well to nod home at the far post.

The hosts continued to push and they got their third. Chris Bush rose highest to get on the end of a good freekick, leaving Sam Johnson stretching his long frame in vain as the ball hit the back of the net.

Binnom-Williams received his marching orders with 21 minutes to go. A lunging challenge brought down his man, earning him a second yellow card of the match.

With a man’s advantage Bromley started to walk away with it. They got their fourth after 72 minutes as a great throughball found Coulson in on goal. A low cross was half-blocked by Josh Staunton, but the ball fell to Josh Rees who made no mistake firing into the roof of the net.

Bromley got their fifth in added time. A short corner went to Sam Wood, whose cross to the back post was met with a strong header. Johnson did well to get down and make a save but Joe Kizzi was there to tap it home from two yards out.

The result sees Town drop down to third whilst Bromley climb up to first in the table.
