As well as Townโs 1-0 win at home to Morecambe, there were nine other FA Cup first round replay fixtures played tonightโฆ
Chesterfield were able to secure their place in the second round as a result of their 3-1 victory over Billericay Town, with former Town striker Tom Denton getting a hattrick to secure a home time against Grimsby Town in the next round of the competition.
Halifaxโs West Yorkshire neighbours Bradford City were taken to penalties by The Shaymenโs fellow National League team Aldershot Town at Valley Parade following a 1-1 draw, with an own goal from Aldershotโs George Fowler being the only goal for the hosts and Danny Devine getting the goal for the visitors.
However, they still managed to get into the second round thanks to the heroics of keeper Richard OโDonnell. The 30-year-old saved efforts from the spot from Matt McClure and Gabriel Osho to help The Bantams to a 4-1 win on penalties. City now face an away fixture at Peterborough United in the second round.
League 1 side Charlton Athletic produced a five-star performance in a 5-0 against their League 2 opponents Mansfield Town. A Lyle Taylor hattrick, alongside goals from Mark Marshall and Nicky Ajose saw The Addicks confirm a place in the next round, where they will face Doncaster Rovers at The Valley.
Alex Addai proved to be the super sub for Cheltenham Town, as the decision to bring him on by Michael Duff changed the game for The Robins in their replay against Halifaxโs fellow National League side Ebbsfleet United.
Just one minute after Addai was brought onto the pitch, Cheltenham went 1-0 up. The substitute was then able to get himself on the scoresheet in the 4th minute of added time, securing a 2-0 win for The Robins and a tie away at Accrington Stanley in the second round.
There was an eight-goal thriller at Broadfield Stadium, as Crawley Town and Southend United played out a game that finished 6-2 to the visitors after extra time. A Josh Doherty own goal and Harry Bunn gave Southend a 2-0 lead going into half time, but a second half brace from Ollie Palmer meant that extra time would be needing to separate the two sides.
Whatever Chris Powell said before the start of extra time must have put an extra spring in the step of the United players, as they went on to score four goals in extra time. Goals from Simon Cox, John White, Sam Mantom and Stephen McLaughlin helped Southend confirm their place in the next round, where they will face Barnsley at home.
Some might have viewed Doncaster Rovers as fortunate to get a replay against Vanarama National League North opponents Chorley, and Grant McCannโs side emphatic 7-0 victory at home to their non-league opponents ensured that there would be no further embarrassment for the League 1 side.
The first half saw Rovers 5-0 up after 45 minutes, with an Alfie May hattrick and goals from Herbie Kane and Matty Blair proving to be the difference. The second half saw the South Yorkshire side go down to ten men, as former Halifax loanee Tom Anderson was sent off for a second bookable offence. This didnโt deter Doncaster however, as Alfie May and John Marquis went on to get the sixth and seventh goals respectively for the League 1 side. They now face an away fixture at fellow League 1 side Charlton Athletic.
Oxford United provided a professional performance for their fans who travelled to The New Lawn, with goals from James Henry, Jamie Mackie and Marcus Browne resulting in a 3-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers for the visitors. United will face fellow League 1 side Plymouth Argyle in the second round.
There will be no side representing Oxford in the second round of the FA Cup, as Oxford City were unable to repeat their heroic performance away at Tranmere Rovers, with the newly promoted League 2 side winning 2-0 thanks to goals from James Norwood and Paul Mullin. This means that Rovers now face a Merseyside derby in the next round, as they will play Southport at home.
It wouldnโt be the FA Cup without an upset, and National League South Slough Town were able to provide the sole upset of the day with an 8-7 win on penalties over National League side Sutton United. Josh Taylor gave the visitors the lead in the 9th minute, but James Dobson was able to get an equaliser for his side in the 81st minute to make it 1-1.
Penalties would be required, after neither side failed to break the deadlock in extra time. After Suttonโs Dean Beckwith missed his sideโs ninth penalty, Sloughโs George Wells was able to give his side the victory with his penalty. They will face the winners of Gillingham v Hartlepool United at home in the second round.
