On a cold European night under the lights, FC Halifax Town managed to record a 0-0 draw against a strong Wrexham side, who started the day top of the table.

It was a lively start for both teams, with the home side looking to take advantage first. Ex-Shayman Mike Fondop-Talom managed to strike an effort against the cross bar from 25 yards out, leaving goalkeeper Sam Johnson helpless, but his clean sheet was still intact.

But it was the Shaymen who thought they had put themselves into the lead after just four minutes. Nathan Clarke rose to meet James Berrettโ€™s corner and powerfully headed it past keeper Rob Lainton. Despite the referee allowing the goal to stand, this was overturned by the linesman who had his flag raised for offside.

Clarke again had the chance to grab the opener just five minutes later. Matty Kosyloโ€™s right footed cross was cushioned down to Clarke by the head of Matty Brown. Clarke went to strike the ball on the volley but was unable to catch it properly.

Jonathan Edwards was next to threaten the Welsh sideโ€™s goal. After linking with Kosylo down on the left, Edwards received the ball back at the edge of the area. Despite setting himself up for the shot, it was finessed high and wide over the goal.

The second half began as the first ended, with Wrexham applying all the pressure on the Halifax back line. Fondop proved a nuisance all afternoon. Towards the latter stages of the first half, he linked up twice with Mark Carrington to threaten Johnsonโ€™s net. Both headers went in the same direction though; to the far right of the goal; to begin the half.

Edwards again came close with a fierce driven side on the left-hand side, before the Shaymen squandered their biggest chance of the game. After breaking from deep, Matty Kosylo had Edwards and Southwell supporting in a 3v2 situation. But the tricky winger was unable to find Edwards with the ball, which would have played the attacker clean through on goal.

Despite this, Halifax will be happy with a solid defensive display and a point away at the league leaders, before taking on Leyton Orient at the MBi Shay Stadium on Saturday 8thSeptember.
