It was a disappointing day for fans of FC Halifax Town as we were beaten 2-1 away from home at the hands of Boreham Wood. After the match, the official website caught up with manager Jamie Fullarton to discuss his new signings and his thoughts on the performance.
It was recently announced that Joe Skarz and James Berrett have joined The Shaymen and they both featured today against Boreham Wood. Fullarton shared with us his thoughts on both players.
“I’m delighted to have them both join the football club. Both Joe and James are experienced players and have accumulated a lot of time in the Football League. When you look to bring players into the squad, you don’t just look at what they can do on the pitch but also how they add balance to the dressing room. Over the season I think they’ll be good additions for us”.
Jamie then went on to discuss his thoughts about the match.
“We were playing away from home against last year’s playoff finalists in the National League, so it was always going to be a difficult game. I felt the lads understood what we were trying to do, and we got ourselves into a strong position taking the lead midway through the second half. To not come away with a point or three, we’re disappointed”.
The goal that the manager mentioned came from yet another set piece and was headed home by Nathan Clarke. The quality of Ben Tomlinson’s delivery has been key for The Shaymen so far this season, so we asked Jamie if set pieces were something he regularly worked on.
“It’s something that all teams work on, or at least they should. If you look at every league, set pieces contribute a large majority of goals that are scored and we’re no different”.
Deep into added time, The Shaymen gave away a penalty and there was plenty of controversy regarding the referee’s decision. At the end of the match, Jamie and the fourth official were clearly in a discussion about the matter, so we asked him if he could sum up their conversation.
“It’s plain and simple. The board goes up showing four minutes, and we get to five minutes and he allows a corner. They then have a second phase and a third phase before the penalty occurs. Whether it was a penalty or not, I can’t say because I haven’t seen it. My issue with the fourth official and referee was that they allowed play to go way beyond what they put up on the board”.
