Josh Umerah’s 96th minute penalty ensured FC Halifax Town would leave Meadow Park empty handed, after succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at Boreham Wood. Nathan Clarke’s 70th minute opener set Halifax in good stead, but Umerah’s brace sunk the Shaymen.

Town travelled to London looking to make it a fifth victory from six games. They started on the front foot, carving out the first real opportunity of the game. Matty Kosylo’s dangerous run from the left allowed a cross into the area. Jonathan Edwards, the recipient, fired on goal; his effort deflecting against the post for the Shaymen, but Town failed to take advantage of the resulting corner.

The home side replied with a variety of chances themselves. Kieran Murtagh was played in at the edge of the area, but his effort fired straight over the bar. Balanta headed narrowly wide of Sam Johnson’s goal but was flagged offside just after.

Jonathan Edwards threatened all afternoon in trying to get in and behind the Boreham Wood defence, and managed to show off his dribbling play after thirty minutes. After beating two, his low, powered drive was gathered by Balcombe.

Balcombe did well soon after to gather a Tomlinson free-kick which narrowly missed the feet of Dayle Southwell, with the striker unable to grab his third of the season.

Murtagh looked dangerous all afternoon for the hosts, with the striker having another solid effort headed up by Captain Matty Brown, taking the sting off the ball for Johnson to gather to keep the scores tied goalless as the half time break approached.

The second half begun much as the first ended. Neither team able to create any clear-cut opportunities to take the lead.

It wasn’t until the seventieth minute that the Shaymen grabbed the lead. Ben Tomlinson, who has been a handful on set pieces all season, had a free-kick put behind for a corner. It was from this that Town took the lead. Tomlinson whipped a corner into the area, which was powerfully headed in at the back post by Nathan Clarke for his second goal of the season.

However, the hosts kept piling on pressure and were back level within six minutes. Murtagh’s cross from the right fell to Josh Umerah in the area, who turned and fired on his right foot past Johnson into the bottom right corner.

Town tried so hard to get back into the game, but after playing the four allocated minutes of injury time, Tom Champion was fouled in the area and a penalty for Boreham Wood was given. Umerah stepped up and fired it home for the hosts, snatching all three points from the Shaymen.
