On Tuesday 14th August, FC Halifax Town will make the short 30 mile trip to The Peninsula Stadium where they will take on Salford City FC.
Both teams have endured mixed pre-seasons. After being crowned champions of the Vanarama National League North last year, the hosts started their preparation for the new campaign with a heavy 4-0 defeat to Fleetwood Town. However, Graham Alexander’s men didn’t let that phase them as they then went on to beat Nantwich Town 2-1.
The inconsistent run of form continued for Salford City as they lost to Barnsley and then finished their pre-season with wins against Woking and Altrincham respectively.
FC Halifax Town endured a similar pre-season to their upcoming opponents. However, the Shaymen have proved that pre-season isn’t all about the results as they have gotten off to a great start this campaign.
A trip down to Essex went exactly to plan as Jamie Fullarton’s men were dominant for the majority of the match and ran out 2-0 winners. Headed goals from Jonathan Edwards and Nathan Clarke meant that the Shaymen finished the opening round of games third in the league table.
FC Halifax Town then made it two wins from two as they hosted Barrow AFC in the opening home match of the season. Goals from Dayle Southwell and captain Matty Brown saw of a spirited Barrow side 2-0.
Then, FC Halifax Town went on to finish matchday three at the top of the table. The Shaymen easily defeated Maidstone United 3-0. Cameron King got his first goal on his first start for the club and then goals from Dayle Southwell and Ben Tomlinson rounded off an extremely impressive performance.
Salford City were one of the favourites to win the Vanarama National League this season but things have not gone to plan so far for the Lancashire side.
BT Sport were on hand to watch Salford’s first ever game in the National League when they hosted Leyton Orient. Salford got off to a great start as they went 1-0 up but a late goal rescued a point for the Orient.
Part-time Gateshead then shockingly upset Salford City at the Gateshead International Stadium. After making national headlines upon his signing, Adam Rooney put the visitors in front but Gateshead rallied to come from behind and win 2-1.
Salford then travelled to London to take on Sutton United where they were once again beaten away from home. With things level at 1-1, Sutton then went down to ten men as Aswad Thomas was sent off. The 10 men found a winner though just after the hour mark and sent Salford packing with back-to-back defeats.
