AFC Halifax bow out in Quarter Finals, Vets lose in Semis.
Last weekend saw the annual WorldNet supporters team tournament take place at its original home of Nottingham with over 64 teams entering the tournament this year. It is the 10th year AFC Halifax have taken part in the event and once again, it was a fantastic weekend.
The group games took place on the Saturday and both the open age team, and the Vets team faced tough groups. The open age sides first game resulted in a narrow defeat to Man City. They got their first win of the day in the next game however against RC Lens B. This was followed up with a win against AFC Wimbledon before an entertaining draw against this year’s league winners, Stevenage. A second-place finish ensured progression through to the knockout stages and a tough draw faced them with French opposition once again in RC Lens A.
The veterans side also had a tough group but started the day well with a 1-0 win over our old friends Oxford. A narrow 1-0 defeat to Everton was followed up with the biggest win of the weekend of 6-1 against Brentford. Even a certain John Barker got on score sheet for that one! The day was closed out with a 1-0 win over Stockport. With a bye given in the last 16, it was Man United who awaited in the Quarter Finals on Sunday.
The open age lads were up first on Sunday although a good finish in the group enabled the lads to have a lie in before the Quarter Final. RC Lens were the opposition who always travel in numbers to this event and always put up a good show. Sadly, you could be mistaken that the AFC lads were still enjoying their lie in as RC Lens raced into a 4-0 lead before half time! The game ended 5-0 and AFCs tournament was over for another year. RC Lens went on to win the tournament beating Stevenage in the final.
The veterans had a lie in too but eventually faced Man United in the Quarter finals. A 1-0 win set up a tie against familiar foes Bury in the semis. It seems in recent years the ties between the 2 sides are always settled by the team that takes that one opportunity that comes to them and this year was no different with AFC coming on the wrong side of a 1-0 score line. Bury went on to win the Vets tournament.
So once again a fantastic tournament with hundreds of football fans taking part. Both AFC Halifax teams went out to the eventual winners in each competition. Congratulations to both Lens and Bury for their well-deserved victories and the IFA for arranging another well organised tournament.
AFC Halifax’s first league match takes place on the 12th August away at Chester.
