It was a disappointing day for the Shaymen as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at home to Gloucester, a result which keeps the Tiger’s slim hopes of reaching the playoffs alive. But what else happened around the Vanarama National League North? Here we look…
It was another entertaining draw between the league-leaders, AFC Fylde, and fellow promotion contenders, Kidderminster Harriers. The game was full of drama and by half-time the Harriers led 2-0 courtesy of Ryan Croasdale and Keith Lowe.
The game was to turn on its head in the final ten minutes as Fylde’s club-record signing, Dan Bradley, pulled one back in the 82nd minute before mayhem ensued; Kidderminster’s Ashley Carter was dismissed for a reckless lunge in the 89th minute before a mass brawl saw the dismissal of Fylde’s Sam Finley and the Harrier’s Tyrell Waite. That wasn’t the end of the drama though as Fylde rescued a point in the 97th minute as the game finished 2-2.
Elsewhere, there was the battle of the Mancunians as Stockport and Salford fought to a draw. Danny Lloyd-McGoldrick put the away side ahead, only to pegged back by a late Richie Allen penalty – it finished 1-1, a result which sees Stockport move ahead of Halifax.
There was disappointment for Chorley as they failed to capitalise on dropped points around them as they lost to Harrogate. The action came in the first-half, as an early penalty and a Simon Ainge goal put the North Yorkshire side ahead – Chorley were to pull one back before the break, but it wasn’t to be enough on the day.
With no side in the top six winning, Darlington had the opportunity to gain valuable ground on the playoff hopefuls against fellow contenders, Brackley. It was a tight affair, but a single Steven Thompson goal brought the Quaker’s the three points as they moved into the playoff places.
Altrincham and Stalybridge partook in the basement battle on Saturday as both sides took another step towards relegation. The match reflected the two-side’s league position and finished 0-0, both sides castaway from those above.
The other side filling the relegation places is Tuesday’s visitors Gainsborough Trinity, who suffered a 1-0 defeat away at Tamworth. Dan Newton bagged the goal as the Lambs remain just the four points away from the playoffs.
Worcester stayed level on points with Gainsborough as they suffered defeat at home to Boston. Adam Chapman tucked away an early penalty, before Tamworth loanee, Louis Briscoe, made it two just before the break.
Bradford Park Avenue took a big step towards safety, whilst simultaneously dragging Telford back in the mire as they picked up a 3-1 win away at Telford. Wayne Brooksby bagged all three goals for Avenue, whilst Lee Hughes scored from the spot for Telford.
Finally, Alfreton dispatched of FC United of Manchester as they moved seven points clear of the drop zone with a 2-1 victory. Whilst Curzon Ashton came from behind to beat Nuneaton by the same score line.
