A full round of fixtures on the second last match day brought up some thrilling ties as the Vanarama National League North nears the end of the 2016-17 season.

Another positive result for FC Halifax Town secured their position in the play-offs and ever closer to a return to the National League. A dominant display from the home team over Curzon Ashton resulted in a replica score line for Halifax from their last game as they won 3-0 once again.

The Shaymen would have expected to nail down that play off spot before the game, coming into their final home game of the season as clear favourites. Halifax dominated throughout the game, creating plenty of chances. An own goal and a diving header from Dion Charles gave the team from Yorkshire a 2-0 advantage at half time. Centre back Danny Hone stopped any chance of a come-back from the away side in the second half as he fired home to secure the points for Halifax.

League champions AFC Fylde also won 3-0 away at mid table Boston United. Two goals from striker Danny Rowe either side of half time and a final from partner Matty Hughes in the 71st minute secured all three points for the away team.

Elsewhere Halifaxโ€™s promotion rivals Kidderminster Harriers were denied the chance to certify second place as they were held 1-1 by relegation threatened Gainsborough Trinity. Gainsborough moved out of the relegation zone with that result as Worcester City lost 2-1 at home to play-off chasing Salford City.

Play-off chasers Chorley were also held to a 2-2 draw by Gloucester City. In a thrilling game, all goals were scored in the first half, including a penalty and a red card for Chorley. The away side were not good enough to take all three points and the pressure mounts on them to get a result against Halifax next week.

Stockport County also gave themselves an outside chance of the play offs with a 2-0 win away at Bradford Park Avenue thanks to late goals from Josh Amis and Danny Lloyd.

Plenty of goals were scored elsewhere in the league as FC United of Manchester thrashed Nuneaton Town 4-1. Goals from Sam Sheridan, Jordan Fagbola, Matthew Wolfenden and George Thomson gifted the team from Manchester an easy three points.

Tamworth also beat relegated Stalybridge 4-0. A hat-trick from Dan Newton and one more from Brandon Fox gave the home side more misery, in comparison to the joy for Tamworth fans.
