FC Halifax Town bow out of the Buildbase FA Trophy in the third qualifying round after losing 3-2 to Matlock Town in the replay, with The Shaymenโ€™s defence of the competition short lived.

It was a hard-fought victory for theNorthern Premier League side, who at one stage of the match let a two goal lead slip as it looked like The Shaymen would turn the game on its head, but Ted Cribleyโ€™s strike with 15 minutes left turned out to be the eventual match winner for the away side.

The two sides could not be separated at Causeway Lane but that certainly did not look the case at the MBi Shay with the away side dominating the match in the opening half.

Matlock deservedly took the lead midway through the first half after Marcus Dinanga coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net. A long ball up the field found Curtis Morrison on the right who worked his way into the 18-yard box getting the better of Nathan Hotte before finding Dinanga who did the rest.

Ten minutes later and the Northern Premier League side doubled their lead through Dinanga with clever work from his striker partner Morrison once again. Another long ball from the defence found the Chesterfield loanee who, not for the first time this match, left Hotte in his wake and Dinanga doubled his and Matlockโ€™s tally from Morrisonโ€™s clever ball across the box.

Whatever Billy Heath said at half-time motivated the side as they came out showing a bit of urgency as it looked increasingly likely that The Shaymen would be heading for a shock result in the final qualifying round.

It took The Shaymen just over ten minutes to claw their way back into the game courtesy of a well worked finish from Jake Hibbs. The midfielder took matters into his own hands after a brilliant knock down from Tom Denton. Hibbs played a neat one-two with forward Richard Peniket in Matlockโ€™s box and showed great composure to finish from ten yards out.

It seemed like the pendulum had swung in the match and The Shaymen looked to capitalise on their dominance. The home team truly obliged as they managed to grab an equalising goal not long after Hibbsโ€™ first.

This time it was substitute Matty Kosylo who, not for the first time this season, scored after coming off the bench. Peniket smashed his header against the bar as it cannoned back down to Kosylo who nodded the ball into net making an immediate impact, to level up the score line and put the home side in the driving seat.

Not so long after the goal Denton had a fantastic chance to put The Shaymen in front for the first time in the match, but the striker didnโ€™t make clean contact with his volley and saw it blaze over the bar.

It turned out to be a crucial point in the match as Matlock, against the run of play at the time, turned the match on its head and took the lead once again through Ted Cribley after quick movement.

This turned out to be the winning goal as The Shaymen saw their defence of the FA Trophy come to a swift end.
