FC Halifax Town striker Tom Denton acknowledges that his side were not at their best as the Shaymen succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat against Gloucester City.
A second half penalty from Joe Hanks put an end to what was a difficult day for the Shaymen, as they struggled to get a foothold in a fixture that would have re-affirmed their spot in the Vanarama National League North play-offs.
Speaking after the game, Denton was keen to put the fixture behind him despite having some positive chances to reflect on.
“It is a disappointing afternoon to be fair especially after the first half. If we had put a few chances away in the first half then I think we would have been home and hosed to be fair. It is a disappointing afternoon but we have got another game now on Tuesday to put it right.”
Taking your chances is always something to rue for the side who felt they should have got something out of the game. For Denton, both personally and as a team, this was exactly the case, although a bit of luck could have helped Town secure at least a point.
“I think we have had plenty of chances, we had enough chances to win two games in that first half obviously with myself included.
“As the game has gone on I think they have defended better than they did in the first half and then they went and got themselves a goal from the penalty which was a mistake. We are disappointed but we will go again on Tuesday.
“It is just down to a bit of luck, maybe. Yes I am disappointed to be fair with my chances, the first one anyway, I thought I should have put that one away. We just have to keep working hard so we can put it right.”
A disappointing afternoon was made even worse after Matty Brown limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Heart breaking for the Defender who has only just recently returned to the side. Despite only having ten men on the pitch, Denton said that the squad still had the belief to go forward.
“We did manage to put a bit of pressure on in the last ten minutes with ten men, you are going to when you are one nil down. You want to push bodies forward but obviously you risk them getting a second. We have had a go at the end there but, like you say, it was not our day today.”
One positive from the game was in the form of a rather unexpected new signing, Dion Charles. The forward, who has joined on loan from Fleetwood Town, was handed a 60 minute run out for his debut, and Denton believes that he showed some encouraging signs.
“For an hour, he looked sharp. He was looking to get in behind and he could have had a goal himself off me there. He will get used to it. It is hard to come in when you have not seen any of the lads before so I am sure he will be fine.”
