Gainsborough Trinity: We Switched Off

It was a tough night in Gainsborough, with Halifax succuMBing to a 3-2 loss โ€“in spite of having led twice. They Shaymen Player spoke with Stephen Drench to ask his thoughts on the game and how the side can move forward.

“Nothing you can really say to be honest, just poor really. First half, first twenty minutes we got the ball down, played well and scored a decent goal. Then we just let them back into it; a set-piece, a free header. Again we’ve gotten ourselves in front and we just think โ€˜right, let’s settle the ship, let’s get our heads down and go win the game’ and again we switch off and they score and it’s 2-2 at half-time instead of 2-1. Just disappointing, a game we should have won and it’s more ground lost on the top teams.”

That statement of “ground lost on the top teams” was very apparent as Halifax dropped to tenth in the league and Drench reflected that with the league as tight as it is, only the result matters.

“The manager said he would rather us play badly and win, like Stalybridge, than play well and lose 3-2 โ€“it goes without saying really, you can keep the ball and play all nice, but if you can’t defend and keep goals out then you’re not going to do anything in this league.”

It really was a tough night, but the one positive to take from the game was the performance of Alex Simmons on the left wing; the youngster from Lincoln showed good pace and got a goal and an assist for his troubles as he tormented the Trinity defence early on. Still, Drench was hesitant to go overboard reiterating his desire for the points rather than individual positives.

“Simmo has come in and done well, it’s always difficult coming into a new team. He takes his goal well and showed some good little bits of play in patches, but overall we can’t take any positives because it was three points dropped.

Three points aren’t the concern on Saturday with Town travelling to Ashton Athletic in the FA Cup. But to avoid similar disappointment on Saturday we need to improve as Drench said:

“We need to perform, simple as. If we don’t turn up, it’s their cup final and they’ll be up for the game and it’ll be a battle. We’ve got to earn the right to play, we’ve got to earn the right to win the game and if we give away goals like we have today then we’ll be in for a tough night.”
