Tom Denton says FC Halifax Town have ‘got to be better’ after the cruel 2-1 defeat to Dover Athletic on Tuesday night at the MBi Shay Stadium. The striker netted Town’s first goal in six hours of football against the Kent side and it looked like the spoils would be shared for a third game in a row, but in what was to be the very last action of the game, Toni Sho-Silva bundled the ball home from a corner.

“We’ve got to be better, especially last kick of the game, we’ve got to pick our men up and see the game out,” said Denton. “After getting back into it at 1-1, I don’t think we deserved to lose tonight, but we have lost and we’ve got to move on.

“Obviously we were thinking we can go and win it but sometimes you’ve got to think you’ve got back into the game and move onto the next one.

“Maybe there was a bit of naivety from us trying to push for the winner, and we’ve been done at the other end.

“Second half I think we were the better team, we’ve had a few chances and might have deserved to win it but we’ve ended up losing it. We’ve had a few blocks, Kosy’s had a few shots and Morgs has had a couple blocked. You need a bit of luck, they’ve scored right at the end there having a bit of luck off the ‘keeper and it’s dropped in over the line.

“I think it might even itself out over the season and hopefully we’ll get a bit of luck soon.”

Regarding the standard of opposition Town are facing up against after gaining promotion, Denton didn’t seem too worried, saying: “I think there has only been Aldershot that have outplayed us if I’m honest.

“Dover have been in the playoffs the last two years and yet we were the better team, second half anyway, and at Chester we were the better team. I think there’s only Aldershot that have really done a number on us.”

The Shaymen travel to the Midlands to face Solihull Moors next, and Denton is hopeful that they can register their first win of the Vanarama National League season on Saturday. He said: “We’ve got to be positive, we’ve got to start the game like we’ve played second half tonight and if we do that we won’t be far away I don’t think. I think we’ll be alright.”
