FC Halifax Town exited the FA Trophy after a 1-0 loss at home to Halesowen. Following the game, Pete Wild spoke Shaymen TV to give his thoughts, the potential red card, back to the league, and Sutton next week.
“We were not good enough,” Wild said. “Fair play to their lads who got it tactically perfect, went man to man with us. We just did not rise to the challenge. Football is about bravery, about sticking you head in where it hurts, getting on top when you are under pressure. We were poor in that respect today. I have no complaints about the result to make, they were the better side. That disappoints as all my sides have heart and desire and there was none of that on show today. I said that in there, if you don’t win headers, tackles and have that bit of composure then you don’t win football matches. We got what we deserved today, we could be playing until tomorrow and we still would not score. I told them that nobody has got any excuse to knock on my door about playing against Sutton, because nobody deserves to be starting next week. It’ll be a blank canvas and I’ll pick the best 11.”
Michael Duckworth was brought down the 76th minute with Robert Evans picking up a yellow card. Wild was confident the card should have been red with Duckworth requiring several minutes of treatment.
“You can’t come in two-footed off the floor and stay on,” Wild told Shaymen TV. “Unfortunately, that could well be a season-ender for him. I’m very disappointed about that and it just compiles my day really.”
Despite Town exiting the FA Trophy, it gives Halifax a chance to focus on the league with the club sitting third in the league, just eight points off top with 13 games to go.
“We’ve got 13 cup finals to go,” Wild said. “But, we are going to have to play a lot better than that to stay where we are. That will be my message going forward to the players.”
Town face Sutton United at home next Saturday and will be hoping for a repeat of the 1-0 win from October.
“We need a reaction out of them,” Wild told Shaymen TV. “We’ve got to make sure we crack on now and that starts with Sutton next week. I’ve made it clear that they all need to improve for next week if they are going to earn the shirt.”
