FC Halifax Town winger Danny Williams was proud of the Shyamen’s defensive performance during an entertaining 0-0 draw against Stockport County at The Shay and is enjoying his new role as a flying wing-back.

In wake of the Boxing Day defeat to the same opposition, manager Pete Wild shuffled his pack into a new 3-5-2 formation and has been rewarded with two solid defensive performances, and two clean sheets.

Speaking to Shaymen TV after the Vanarama National League match, Williams noted how difficult the game was, but was pleased with his side’s defending.

“It was a tough game,” he said. “I thought it got a bit end-to-end towards the end, we had a chance to nick it with Staunts’ [Josh Staunton’s] header towards the end, but it was a tough game.

“I thought that they came at us really well, I thought we defended our box good, kept our shape well. I thought it was a good game for a 0-0, pretty entertaining for both sets of fans.”

Williams said he’s enjoying his change of role as a wing-back in Wild’s new 3-5-2 formation.

“I like it, he said. “I played it at Chester, I played at Dundee as a wing back quite a lot and a couple of times at Inverness as well. I like it, getting up and down, but I also like the defensive side as well. I think it’s suited us, the last couple of games.

“The gaffer was saying we’ve conceded quite a few goals over the last few games, but in the last two we’ve not conceded, so it’s working on that front. We need to take that into the next game now, and hopefully we can get a win at Barnet.”

Reflecting on the change in system to the team as a whole, Williams said: “You can see that it’s changed. A couple of clean sheets in the last few games, I think the three games before that we conceded nine, but I think we’re defending our box a lot better now and I think attacking wise, I think it gives us the opportunity to get out through the wing backs.

“I thought Jeff did that well today on that side. We’re new to it, we’ve done it a couple of times now and we’ll work on it in training again, try and perfect it, and take it into Barnet.”

Looked ahead to the Barnet fixture on Saturday, Williams predicted it would be “another tough game.”

“There’s no easy games in this league,” he said. “[There’s] a lot of travelling, and a lot of games this time of year as well. They come thick and fast, but that’s what we want, we want to play games, and it will be a tough game, but we’re looking forward to it.”

And at that the start of a new year, Williams spoke about his personal targets for 2020.

“Working hard for the team, giving everything I’ve got, that’s me, that’s why I try and do every weekend, and that’s what I’ll continue to try and do.”
