FC Halifax Town winger Jeff King identified the Shaymen’s fans as being a major contributor to yesterday’s Vanarama National League victory over Chesterfield at The Shay.

After the disappointment of Thursday’s Boxing Day result, a fantastic following of more than 2,000 home fans flooded into The Shay to roar on their side to a deserved 1-0 victory.

“The fans are always on side when we are at The Shay,” King told Shaymen TV after the match.

“They felt like an extra man to us today and we really felt the support. When you’re shooting towards the South Stand you can really feel their noise.”

Jack Redshaw scored a 66th minute penalty, which ultimately won Town the three points that narrows the gap between them and the top of the table to just eight points.

There was some pre-match drama as, ahead of playing in a brand-new 3-5-2 formation, right wing-back Michael Duckworth had to pull out of the game with a late hamstring injury.

King was therefore called into action at the last minute, slotting into the right wing-back role.

“I thought going into the game with a different dimension we might have struggled but the players were excellent,” King said.

“I thought the first half we were great and we started well. The second half we came out and did exactly the same. They couldn’t get out of there half in the second half and I thought it was a great performance.

“I felt comfortable in my position. It was a strange one really I wasn’t supposed to be playing really, Ducky was starting but he pulled out last minute so the gaffer put me in.

“I found it similar to playing on the wing and I was comfortable throughout the game.”

Town’s number 20 talked us through his routine through this busy festive period.

“We will recover as usual and come back and train on Monday,” he said. “We owe one to the fans for the result at Stockport and hopefully we can get our revenge. It’s a quick turn around and we know what they are about so hopefully it’ll be a win.”

He also mentioned how positive the dressing room is after this result.

“It’s the best dressing room I’ve been in at a club and we all know we have to rotate so it’s great. If anyone makes a mistake, we all back each other so we are all together. It’s a great group of lads.”
