FC Halifax Town manager Pete Wild was delighted with the reaction of his players during their 1-0 Vanarama National League victory over Chesterfield at The Shay.

Town put Thursday’s disappointing Boxing Day result behind them with a dominant performance at home, in a game that would have seen the Shaymen win by more had it not been for a number of good saves from the visiting goalkeeper.

With a clean sheet thrown into the bargain, a satisfied Wild spoke to Shaymen TV immediately after the match to give his thoughts on the game, the change of formation, the dominant performance, and the return match with Stockport County.

“We did really well today,” Wild said. “In terms of shape, we tried something a little bit different, to address the goals we conceded, and the lack of chances created. We had to do something different. I threw it on the lads before the game, we did no work on it, and I was really pleased with the reaction from the lads.”

Town made the shift to a 3-5-2 formation for the first time this season. It had an instant impact, with Josh Staunton and Jack Redshaw in particular shining in the new formation. Wild was delighted how the shape worked, especially given the lack of time spent working on it.

“We just needed to be that little bit harder to beat,” Wild told Shaymen TV. “That was the message to the lads going out today. There were some simple rules to follow and they followed them to the letter.”

The Shaymen completed the game never looking like they would lose. Wild was very happy with the all-round performance from the team and the result to go with it.

“We created lots of chance, could have got a few more,” he said. “I don’t really care how many goals we win by as long as we win. We kept the tempo going and got the clean sheet. We finally broke through with Redshaw getting the penalty.”

Halifax host Stockport on New Year’s Day, having endured a disappointing Boxing Day reverse fixture. Wild is confident the team will go into the match with renewed confidence following today’s win.

“We have got to give an even better response against Stockport,” Wild said. “They won again today so they will be flying. So, we are going to be tough to play against, and that is my main focus between now and Wednesday.”
