FC Halifax Town goalkeeper Sam Johnson felt that yesterday’s victory over Wrexham was just what the Shaymen needed ahead of a busy Christmas schedule.
Town easily brushed aside their fellow Vanarama National League opponents in the first round of The BuildBase FA Trophy with a 4-0 win at The Shay.
“We needed that win for a bit of a confidence booster going into the festive period,” the Town stopper told Shaymen TV.
Johnson saw the home side score early on with a Niall Maher free-kick, before Jack Redshaw soon made it two after a cheeky chip over the visiting keeper.
Not too long after that Town’s 6ft 7inch gloveman made a crucial penalty save to keep the game at 2-0.
“It was a bit of luck really,” Johnson said, modestly. “I’m not one to blow my own trumpet but I just went one way and I got it right. Luckily I kept hold of it as well.”
Town bossed the game against Wrexham, leaving Johnson as a spectator for large parts.
“You’ve just got to stay switched on,” he said. “I’ve been keeping for a while now, so I think I know what I am doing!”
When questioned about the difficulties between playing league and cup football, he said: “We have a good squad and rotation is something everyone in that dressing room knows about. There shouldn’t be any problems.”
The Shaymen face a tough match against 12th-place Notts County at The Shay next Saturday.
“It’s a busy period and there is lots of tough games coming up,” he number one said. “We all have to stay switched on. It’s a big game for us. We have to get the home form up as we have been slacking but hopefully, we can get a big performance next Saturday.”
