Torquay United: Should Start From The Off

FC Halifax Town midfielder Niall Maher was frustrated that it took the Shaymen so long to “get going” during their Vanarama National League match against Torquay United at The Shay.

Town conceded two early goals against their visitors from the south coast, but from then on they bossed large chunks of the match, in the process creating lots of chances.

However, the Gulls managed to strike twice more in the second half, rendering Town’s own two strikes null.

“Two set pieces in the first half killed us,” Maher told Shaymen TV after the final whistle. “It shouldn’t take us until 2-0 down to get going, we should start from the off. Obviously, that’s something we have to put right.

“We’ve got to take our chances when we create them. At the end of the day it’s all about who takes the chances and who scores and at the end of the day we haven’t, and they have.”

Coming off the back of a good win on Tuesday night against Sutton United, Town couldn’t quite take advantage of other teams around them in the table dropping points.

They now sit third in non-league’s top tier, heading into the F.A. Cup break next weekend, and Maher believes a week off could be just the ticket for Town as they work on their game.

“Yeah it’s good for the team,” he said. “Gives us time to work hard and go again. With it being the F.A. Cup it’s time to address what we’re doing well and over the next two weeks go and put it right.”
