Ahead of FC Halifax Townโ€™s trip down to Chesterfield, we look at 10 things you may or may not have known about the midlands club.

  1. Originally founded in 1866, it wasnโ€™t until 1919 that Chesterfield took its current form after several liquidations and reformations.
  2. Historically playing their games at Saltergate, Chesterfield now play their matches at the Proact which has been their home since 2010
  3. Chesterfieldโ€™s record attendance stands at 30,561. This came against Tottenham Hotspur in 1938.
  4. England World Cup winner Gordon Banks began his professional career with the Spireites. Making his debut in a Third Division match in 1958.
  5. Current manager John Sheridan is in his second managerial spell with the club. The first came between 2009 and 2012, winning the Football League Trophy whilst being relegated to League Two.
  6. Goalkeeper Shwan Jalal was called up by the Iraq national team, playing the first half of an unofficial friendly against Zakho FC.
  7. The Spireites highest league finish saw them come fourth in the Second Division at the end of the 1946-47 season.
  8. Chesterfield have retired the number 14 shirt. This number was worn by Jack Lester who made over 190 appearances for the club. He went on to become manager of Chesterfield in September 2017 before parting ways in April 2018.
  9. The clubโ€™s main rivalry is with Mansfield Town, which was last played in April 2018, seeing Mansfield come out on top.
  10. They have won the Derbyshire Senior Cup seven times. The first being 1899 and the most recent coming in 2018.
