Following the Oldham-born Wild’s return to his former club he described Town’s impressive 1-0 win over Sky Bet League Two opposition as,
“Very brave. We’ve been working on that as a team, we were dominant in AND out of possession, and we saw snippets of that bravery tonight. Out of possession we narrowed the pitch and cut off angles for their ‘bigger’ passes”.
Town took a two-minute lead through a trialist, something that greatly satisfied the new Shay boss,
“Good! We got balls in the box and to score within the first few minutes is pleasing. It shows the lads are taking on board what we’re asking of them. I thought we had five or six very good chances in the game, once again pleasing to see but we need to be more ruthless. We decided to take a touch sometimes when we didn’t need to. We talked about that after the game about being sharper”.
The Shaymen also keeping a clean sheet in the process, an aspect of the game the club is all too familiar with,
“I enjoy keeping clean sheets. I fully understand supporters want to see goals and I intend to marry these clean sheets up with goals. I’m really pleased with everyone on the park, [we] got some good minutes into them. It gives us optimism going into Saturday. Let’s not get too carried away, it’s a friendly at the end of the day but it’s a good start.
It’s been hectic and that is why I’m calling for patience, let’s get things right in the interim, not make naïve, silly decisions. We need to bring people in – let’s get it right! We will set up for the season in a better way!”
On the disruptions of this pre-season Wild added,
“Were about 10% behind where we went to be. One thing I’m going to do – I’m not going to give excuses we are where we are, let’s get on with it!”
On the welcomed return of Josh Macdonald from his 18-month injury/rehabilitation,
“Great for young Josh. It’s great to have him back, we’re going to have to work with him and get him some games to get him back into where he should be. He’s a great young lad and he wants to do well”.
Attention turned to the exclusion of last season’s Captain Matty Brown from the team with Wild explaining,
“He’s had a dead leg and its flared up in the warm-up. In a friendly you’re not going to risk him. I thought Josh Staunton came in and deputised brilliantly. That gives me loads to think about ahead of Saturday [vs Ebbsfleet United]. Pleasing headaches!”
When asked “will we see new players come in before Saturday?” Wild was quick to answer,
“We hope so! I’m optimistic, whether the players are is a different thing! We’re hoping to get a couple over the line at least but that remains to be seen”.
On the long trip to Kent to face Fleet, he informed,
“We will travel down Friday. We’ll try and get on the road as early as possible. I’m looking forward to the challenge. Let’s see what it brings then we have two home games. Hopefully we’ll go on to give a performance the fans want to see!”
