We’re going for a fairly recent FC Halifax Town player this time in defender, James Bolton. He made 79 appearances for Town between 2014 and 2016, having also made a combined 19 appearances on loan at the Shay from Macclesfield Town. In total, he netted 11 times.

Bolton saw the good and bad during his time with the Shaymen, having been part of the play-off side, as well as being a member of the side who were relegated to the National League North in 2016.

Despite the relegation, it appeared that Bolton had impressed a number of other National League clubs, and he was snapped up by Gateshead.

Whilst at the International Stadium, James made 39 appearances, scoring once. Despite only spending one season as a regular with the Tynesider’s, he seemed to have been of interest to a number of Football League manager’s.

As a result, he accepted a move to League One Shrewsbury Town. His Football League debut came on the opening day of the 2017/18 season during a 1-0 victory over Northampton Town. Whilst at Shrewsbury, Bolton made 61 appearances, scoring twice.

There could be links made between James’ spells here and at Shrewsbury as he went through good and bad. The Shrews were close to promotion in the 2017/18 season, but had a close call in the last campaign, just avoiding the drop into League Two.

For the upcoming season, James has signed a contract with Portsmouth. As ever, they will be much fancied for promotion to the Championship under Kenny Jackett. All the best to James for this season and the remainder of his career.
