Former Halifax Town boss, Chris Wilder, has beaten off the likes of Pep Guardiola to win the LMA Manager of the Year award.
After ending his playing career at Town, Wilder spent six years in charge at The Shay and was the last manager in charge of the old club before reforming as FC Halifax Town.
This season, he’s guided his boyhood club Sheffield United to the promised land of Premier League football. His unusual and attacking style of play has won him many admirers and he was top of a shortlist that included Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino to win the award from the League Managers Association.
Sir Alex Ferguson and England manager Gareth Southgate presented Wilder with the award and he said: “It just shows you this can happen, it is dreams, inspiration for everybody. There is a pathway through for all of us and hopefully it has shown the way for everybody else. If we can stay in the Premier League, that would be fantastic. It is an exciting and unbelievable experience we are going into.”
Wilder now becomes only the fifth manager outside the top flight of English football to win the award. Eddie Howe was the last man to accomplish that feat and we all know how well he’s done in the Premier League. Is Wilder destined for the same success?
No one can say for certain how his Sheffield United side will fare in the Premier League, but maybe we can say he learnt everything he knows right here with The Shaymen.
