Good afternoon, and welcome to you all. You will be aware that our Sponsored game against Ebbsfleet last time out was literally a washout. These things do happen, of course, and certainly can’t always be anticipated. On the plus side, the food was (as always) excellent, and the appearance of our guest Alex Smith was much appreciated, as was that of his friend Albert Lord. I didn’t realise that Albert was actually on our books for some time as understudy to Alex, but he explained all, and proved extremely knowledgeable regarding the team’s reserves at that time.
For those who joined us, and anyone else who may still wish to participate, we intend trying a second time this coming Tuesday for the rearranged Ebbsfleet fixture. I appreciate it may be risky, but let’s hope the ground staff can work the required miracle.
Assuming the three scheduled games go ahead this week, there will only be two remaining chances to return your raffle tickets. Don’t forget that the draw will be held during half-time of the Wrexham fixture on Easter Monday, April 22nd.
Today, our extract from the “Halifax Town AFC Official History Handbook 1892 to 1922/3” is entitled “War-time Difficulties”. It is set in the aftermath of the 1914-15 season.
Following on this came a season of war-time football in the Midland Combination. Attention, all over the world, was now directed on matters of far greater importance than football, and players, both amateur and professional, were “doing their bit” in the shell-swept fields of France and Flanders, and football at home, shorn of its restrictions, and minus its leading lights, degenerated into a mere farce. Bearing this in mind, the Town directors eventually closed down for the duration of the war.
Returning to the present time, today is the first chance I have had to thank everyone who assisted with the recent Race Night held at the Belgrave Social Club, Claremount. The Supporters Club and RAOB are set to benefit by almost £300 each, and everyone there seemed to enjoy themselves. Unfortunately, Town fan Graham Hadden suffered a medical problem during the evening, and I sincerely hope he has recovered by now.
