FC Halifax Town were held to a 0-0 draw against Havant & Waterlooville. Captain Matty Brown spoke to Shaymen TV to give his thoughts.
He said: “At the end of the day we’ll take a point being down to 10 men. Whether it was red card I don’t know. We started the game brightly with two up top. I thought we created chances and looked a threat, even when we went down to 10 men. At half time we were saying ‘we still fancy ourselves to go and win the game’. In the second half it changed slightly. They got a little bit more control as you’d expect with the extra man. You’ve got to take the point as a positive. The amount of hard work that’s gone in to that today, as a squad, it’s different class. Everyone’s put a shift in. We wanted to win the game, but certain things are put into perspective, so we’ll take the point today.”
Halifax were reduced to ten men after just over 30 minutes when James Berrett was shown a straight red. Brown is happy the team were able to come together and keep a clean sheet.
He said: “The team worked their socks off. The gaffer instils that into us. There is no hiding place when you’re playing in this team, we’ve all got to put a shift in. We all knew the importance of that, even more so when we went down to 10 men. People are having to do jobs they don’t normally do. That just shows the attitude within the group. Everyone wants to put the shift in and late on we’re still chasing to try and win the game, even with 10 men. It’s hats off to us, but it’s another point on the board and we’ll go again.”
Despite the sending off, town remained in the game for the duration. Brown believes that whilst a draw was a fair result, this highlights Town’s strengths.
He said: “It’s probably a fair result. It was always going to be tough. We wanted to try and win but I don’t think we really did enough to go and win the game on the balance of things. We put a tremendous shift in to keep them at bay and limit them to virtually no chances. I wouldn’t say we’ve been robbed or anything. We haven’t done enough to win the game even though we’ve had certain chances. It’s another point on the board. On another day, you’ve gone down to 10 men early and you lose the game. Then you’re looking worse for wear, but it’s another point closer to where we want to be. We’ll prepare well this week for Eastleigh away.”
Halifax face another long trip next weekend as they travel to Eastleigh. Brown feels that once they’ve recovered, they’ll be ready to go.
He said: “We’ll sleep well after this because everyone is a bit tired. We’ve had a tough week, a three-game week with a lot of travelling. It’s all about recovery now and we’ll go again Tuesday in build-up to Eastleigh. We’re going to put the work in and they’re on a great run at the minute. We’re confident in each other as a group and we’ll go there and try and get something from the game.”
