FC Halifax Town travel to the Proact Stadium this afternoon where they face Chesterfield who are hanging in there just inside the relegation zone. The game is teeing up to be a tasty affair. In this article, I will be looking at Marc Antoine Fortune the 37-year-old legend who is currently top scorer for Chesterfield this season.
Marc Antoine Fortune has had a very exotic career spending his time at 13 different clubs. The French international started his professional career at 17 years of age at a lower league French side called Angouleme where he spent four years, until he got a big move to French top division side Lille. He played 16 games for Lille within two seasons scoring 0 goals and also being on loan at French side Rouen in his second season there. Lille didn’t fancy Marc Antoine, so he made a permanent move to French Second division side Brest. He scored 10 goals in 33 appearances that season but after that one season at Brest, his time in France was over and he’d move over to the Netherlands where he signed for Dutch Club FC Utrecht.
A different chapter in Fortune’s career where he would face tough opponents such as Ajax and PSV, he enjoyed a successful time there scoring 13 goals in 56 appearances, but it is said to have struggled after the death of his friend and teammate David Di Tommaso. Midway through his second season he went back to France Joining AS Nancy who were in the top division. It’s safe to say Fortune struggled again at Nancy and only spent 1 and half season there before joining the Premier League where he signed on loan for West Brom. He only had half a season at West Brom, but he scored on his debut and won West Brom Supporters player of the year despite only joining in January.
The following season Fortune joined Celtic for £3.8 million, after scoring 10 goals in 32 appearances in one season, Fortune wasn’t in the plans for Celtic and Joined West Brom after his successful loan spell. This team around he spent 3 years there but went on a loan spell to Doncaster. He didn’t really get himself going this time around. In 2013 he joined Wigan, then moved onto Coventry City, Southend United and finally in August 2018 he joined Chesterfield where he’s enjoying his time with 6 goals in 16 appearances and is currently the top scorer, he may be older but his experience is certainly the thing to look out for.
