Elsewhere in the Vanarama National League, there were eleven fixtures played alongside FC Halifax Town’s 1-0 defeat at home to Sutton.
With that being the case, we have decided to take a closer look at what happened in those eleven games.
The day’s lunchtime kickoff saw London based side Barnet face off against Dover Athletic in a fixture televised on BT Sport. John Still’s men emerged 2-0 victors in that one, with Jack Taylor and Mauro Vilhete getting the goals for the home side.
The first of the day’s 3:00pm games saw Lancashire side AFC Fylde play Ebbsfleet United at Mill Farm. With both sides currently residing in the top half of the table, it was to be a crucial fixture for both teams. Fylde ended up winning 2-0, with Ryan Croasdale and the league’s joint second top scorer Danny Rowe bagging to ensure victory.
Aldershot Town were hosting a Wrexham team that had only just named Graham Barrow as their new permanent manager following the departure of Sam Ricketts to Shrewsbury Town. The newly appointed manager was unable to oversee a victory in his first game in charge since taking over on a full-time basis however, as the game finished 0-0.
The Shaymen’s opponents last Tuesday, Boreham Wood, faced a visit to Essex as they were facing Braintree Town away from home. Lyle Della Verde put the hosts 1-0 up after half an hour, but Justin Shaibu scored just as he did on Tuesday in the 50th minute to get the equaliser for his side. There were to be no further goals though, and the game finished 1-1.
At the lower end of the table, Bromley played against Maidenhead United in what was to be a crucial fixture for both teams in their respective bids to avoid relegation. It was to be Neil Smith’s side that would get all three points in this one, as Jack Holland was the sole goal scorer in what turned out to be a 1-0 victory for Bromley.
Halifax’s Boxing Day opponents Harrogate Town were away at Hampshire side Eastleigh. Joe Leesley opened the scoring with a goal for the visitors after just two minutes, but goals from Ben Williamson and Cavanagh Miley were enough to secure a 2-1 win for The Spitfires.
Richard Money’s first home game in charge of Hartlepool United saw his new side play against Havant & Waterlooville. The visitors took the lead after twelve minutes, with Tyler Frost scoring on his league debut for the away side, having signed on loan from Reading last week. This was to be short lived however, with Hartlepool equalising just six minutes later through Liam Noble. There were to be no further goals however, with the game finishing 1-1.
On the back of a 2-0 win against Salford two weeks ago, Chesterfield now faced Leyton Orient away from home. Josh Koroma gave the home side the lead after eight minutes, but Doncaster loanee Alex Kiwomya manage to get an equaliser in the thirty fifth minute. The second half saw Orient secure all three points though, as Marvin Ekpiteta and Macauley Bonne ensured that Orient would be getting all three points.
Gateshead’s fixture away at Maidstone United turned out to have a nervy ending. A goal from Robbie Tinkler and a brace Luke Molyneux saw The Heed 3-0 up after fifty-six minutes, but two late goals from Maidstone’s Jake Cassidy and George McLennan will have certainly had Gateshead fans biting their nails out of nervousness. No further goals followed however, and the game finished 3-2 to Gateshead.
Salford City found themselves on the back of another shock defeat, as they fell victim to Dagenham & Redbridge in a 2-1 loss at home. Carl Piergianni gave the home side the lead, but two goals from Conor Wilkinson and Angelo Balanta were enough to give the visitors all three points.
The last result of the day saw Barrow win 1-0 away at Solihull Moors. John Rooney, the younger brother of former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, scored the only goal of the game in the seventy fourth to ensure his side would be returning to Cumbria with all three points.
