Saturday the 8th of December sees a return to league action for FC Halifax Town, as Jamie Fullarton’s side face off against London based side Dagenham & Redbridge away from home.
With that mind, we have compiled a list of ten things that you may not know about Saturday’s opposition.
- Dagenham & Redbridge came into existence in 1992, as a result of a merger between Dagenham and Redbridge Forest.
- The Daggers play their games at Victoria Road. Opened in 1917, the ground has an official capacity of 6,078.
- Dagenham & Redbridge are currently managed by Peter Taylor, who once took charge of England for one game on a caretaker basis following the departure of Kevin Keegan. England lost 1-0 to Italy under the stewardship of Taylor.
- Former Manchester United and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard currently serves on the Dagenham board, taking up the role in September of this year as part of Trinity Sports Holdings’ takeover of the club.
- The London based side aren’t the club currently under the ownership of Trinity Sports Holdings, with the American based consortium also owning Memphis 901 FC and Minor League Baseball team Memphis Redbirds.
- The Daggers were promoted to the Football League during the 2006-07 season, as they won promotion from the then-named Nationwide Conference by winning the league. The 2015-16 season would see the side relegated back to the Vanarama National League however.
- West Bromwich Albion striker Dwight Gayle spent a portion of his career with Dagenham & Redbridge. Having signed for the club from Essex Senior League side Stansted in 2011, he went on to play eighteen games and score seven goals for the club before signing for Peterborough United in November 2012 on loan, before The Posh made the deal a permanent one just two months later.
- Last season saw Dagenham finish eleventh in the Vanarama National League, with a total of 68 points accumulated throughout the season.
- The Daggers set an FA Cup record during the 2001-02 season, as Tony Roberts became the first goalkeeper in the history of the FA Cup to score a goal from open play. His goal came in a fourth qualifying round game that finished 2-2 against Basingstoke Town.
- Another record set in a cup competition by Dagenham & Redbridge was the longest penalty shootout in the history of professional football, as The Daggers triumphed over fellow London based side Leyton Orient 14-13 on penalties in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2011.
