AFC Wimbledon: Club Connections

Michael Collins

The former Huddersfield midfielder joined his hometown club of FC Halifax Town last season on the 9thof December. Collins, who then went on to manage Bradford City, came out of retirement to play 22 games for The Shaymen last season.

After Collins’ spell at Huddersfield, he joined Scunthorpe United. In his final year at The Iron, he had a spell on loan at AFC Wimbledon where he only played 9 games.

Shane Smeltz

Smeltz made the direct move from AFC Wimbledon to FC Halifax Town back in 2006. Having played 42 games for The Dons he scored 19 goals and earned himself a move to The Shaymen. He didn’t have a great spell in West Yorkshire scoring only twice in 31 games.

Smeltz is a New Zealand footballing legend having won Oceanic footballer of the year in 2007 and 2008. He’s joint 7thfor the most capped in New Zealand’s history playing 58 times for The Kiwi’s. His scoring record is just as impressive, notching 24 goals putting him level with Chris Wood as second top goal scorer for New Zealand.
