FC Halifax Town U19s were beaten 2-0 after defensive errors made in the first half. A one on one followed by a penalty by the Gateshead striker just proved too much for the young Shaymen to come back.
The young Shaymen won their last 2 previous league games against Darlington u19s and Carlisle United. Gateshead on the other hand, won 1 and drew another putting the young Shaymen in a good position. The game was also the first game Town’s u19’s played at Liversedge’s ground following their first home game being played at Weetwood.
There was quite an unusual start from the young Shaymen as they struggled to keep the ball in some spells of the game which led to Gateshead being gifted opportunities to score. Right from the off you could see Gateshead’s aim was to hit their no.9 and play from there but Town did well to prevent too much happening from him in the first couple minutes.
The first chance game Gateshead’s way with the young Shaymen getting two banks of 4 compact, defending the width of the goal. However, the Gateshead midfield player looked to get a shot off which went wide. The visitors began to show some early pressure leaving town’s u19’s on the back foot.
Their chance came as town cleared the ball deep into the Gateshead half but the rather lucky clearance of the centre back shown to be catching the u19s back 4 in behind with the two centre back’s Karamo Sesay and Tosin Abioye not tucking in early leaving the striker 1 v 1 who slotted in the bottom right corner. The football looked rather rushed from the u19s however, they did have good spells where they kept the ball.
Mark Adiele missed an opportunity to equalize as Alex King slid the ball out wide from him to run onto. The pacey winger took his first touch past the Gateshead centre half which put him 1 on 1 with the keeper who did well to save it. Not long after Gateshead doubled their score after Abioye’s foul in the box. Once again, the striker slotted the penalty into the bottom right corner putting the pressure on the young Shaymen.
The second half was a much better start. Steve Nichol made a few changes to the squad, but the team talk must have put the u19s in the right mindset as they applied constant pressure on the Gateshead defence. Chances came but they were just not being converted to goals. The best chance being, substitute Spencer Gordon’s cross into the back post which Jos Veitch ran onto but just narrowly missing the ball with his right foot.
After the tough, hard working 90 minutes, it was Gateshead who went home with the 3 points. The young Shaymen move their focus on their next game vs South Shields in the League cup.
