FC Halifax Town progressed to the 1st round proper of the FA Cup last night. They beat Warrington 2-0 at home in the replay of the tie.

We spoke to Jamie Fullarton after the game.

โ€œObviously, Iโ€™m very pleased. Being a cup game, itโ€™s about winning and getting through to the next round. Obviously, we had to take it to a replay and I think tonight the players showed quality and competency in everything that they did.โ€

The Shaymen played great football throughout the game and created many chances. Fullarton believes however that more of those chances should have been put into the back of the net.

โ€œI think we usually create chances, especially when weโ€™re at home and itโ€™s pleasing when we do that because you need to create chances to score goals. But, we created in abundance tonight and some dogged defending from Warrington and maybe a little lack of quality at times or the lack of decision making on when to pull the trigger from our lads. But I must say the chances we created from the play that we had was very pleasing and theyโ€™ve managed to do that throughout the season so far. Although we are still looking to increase our ratio on chances to goals and I think when we do that, weโ€™ll have more games when we win than not.โ€

Dayle Southwell scored the second goal of the game after Jordan Prestonโ€™s opened the scoring in the first half. Southwellโ€™s goal was a lovely team move finished off with real precision from the Halifax number 9.

โ€œA lot of the chances that we did create came from good team play, as opposed to a single individual showing a bit of excellence. I think itโ€™s a great credit to the players to show what we ask of them and the application of what we work on.โ€

Although it was a win. Fullarton was reluctant to say this game was a boost in confidence as the team has been playing well.

โ€œIโ€™m not sure if the win will boost confidence. I think over the season, other than a few exceptions over the past 10 or so games, I think we create quite a few chances, or weโ€™ve had a few clean sheets and performances when weโ€™ve defended well. I think tonight reflected the group, with many players missing from the starting eleven it created plenty of opportunities for others to perform and I thought they did exceptionally well.โ€

Cameron King was bought into the starting eleven after making an impact off the bench on Saturday. He really impressed sitting next to Josh Staunton in midfield.

โ€œThereโ€™s no doubt what Cameron (King) can bring to the team and Iโ€™m pleased with his performance and itโ€™s good for him to perform like that. But itโ€™s important to look at whether it fits in with the team like itโ€™s a cog in the wheel. I think he contributed and helped us tonight, with a performance that was pleasing.โ€

We have mentioned Southwellโ€™s goal, but Jordan Preston did score the first. His corner went straight into the back of the net. Plenty of other chances were created via set pieces as well.

โ€œOne thing you can say about the group, and when I talk about the group, I talk about staff, I talk about players and everybody involved. We work on organisation and structure and itโ€™s no surprise we create chances from our set pieces. Itโ€™s important that the delivery is important but again the triggering of movement is as well and itโ€™s great to see that.โ€

Warrington did well to get it back to the MBi Shay Stadium for a replay, but Fullarton was just concentrating on how well his players performed over the tie.

โ€œOur focus is on us. Great credit for them for their performance on Saturday, but my focus on Saturday was the same as it is tonight. So, without giving anyone credit r taking credit away from anyone, we look at how we perform. I donโ€™t want to take anything away from the players because again I thought we were competent in everything that we did, I felt that we were in control throughout and as you said we created a number of chances and the score line could have been more.โ€

The winner of this tie, we now know is The Shaymen, earn themselves a trip to League 2 side, Morecambe, on November the 10th. However, Fullarton is concentrating on every game as it comes.

โ€œMy thoughts are Eastleigh on Saturday. Cup games take care of themselves. Weโ€™ve got four or five games before that match. So, my focus is Eastleigh and after that, it will be Solihull Moors, and after that, it will be Havant and Waterlooville. So sorry not to indulge in the love of the cup but we are back in league action at home again and another chance for three points.โ€
