Warrington Town: Club Connections

The FA Cup returns to The MBi Shay tonight in a winner takes all fourth qualifying round replay against Warrington Town after Saturdays 2-2 draw at Cantilever Park.
Here weโ€™ll look at the players who have worn the blue of The Shaymen and the yellow of Warrington.

Simon Lenighan

Current central midfielder Lenighan spent a couple of months playing for Warrington in 2016 after leaving Rotherham United. Lenighan first joined Town on loan from Leeds United in 2014. After that heโ€™s had spells at numerous clubs including Harrogate Town and Guiseley. Lenighan re-joined The Shaymen last summer and has being a regular in midfield for Jamie Fullarton.

Matt Doughty

Doughty could be found in either in the back four at left back or in the midfield. Doughty began his career with Chester City, and got into the first team towards there stay in the football league with relegation coming in 2000. Football League Rochdale came calling one year later where he spent three years with the club making 108 appearances.
In 2004 he joined Halifax Town spending four years at the club appearing 131 games scoring just the one goal. Doughty was an important player in Chris Wilderโ€™s team reaching the Conference play-off final. In 2008 Doughty left Town after the club folded. He joined hometown club Warrington in 2014 spending a season there, beforehand Doughty had two spells with Altrincham, Hyde and Witton Albion.

Elfyn Edwards

Edwards began his career in 1977 with Wrexham enjoying a period of success with his two seasons in North Wales. Edwards won promotion up to division two and the Welsh Cup meaning Wrexham would compete for the European Cup Winners Cup. But Edwards was unable to progress past the first round with his time at the club.
Edwards joined Halifax Town in 1993 making his debut in a 0-0 draw against Kettering. Edwards spent one season at The Shay making 32 appearances scoring one goal in Towns first season back down in the Conference. After leaving Halifax in โ€˜94 Edwards had spells at Southport Winsford United and finishing with Warrington Town. Edwards spent much of his career with Macclesfield Town making 259 appearances scoring 23 times.
