FC Halifax Town entertain Hartlepool United at the MBi Shay Stadium on Saturday. Here are 10 things you may or may not know about our visitors.

  1. Hartlepool United were founded in 1908, named as Hartlepools United Football Athletic Company.
  2. Hartlepool were relegated to the National League at the end of the 2016/17 season after finishing 23rd in League Two.
  3. When Brian Clough took over as manager in 1965, he took the job despite saying: โ€œI don’t fancy the placeโ€.
  4. The club are nicknamed, The Pools.
  5. You will probably already know that Sky Sportsโ€™ Soccer Saturday host, Jeff Stelling, is a vocal supporter of the club.
  6. The club won the FA Amateurs Cup in the 1904/05 season.
  7. Rather humorously, in the 2002 council election, the club’s own mascot, “H’Angus the Monkey” (Stuart Drummond), was elected as mayor of Hartlepool as an independent candidate.
  8. The clubโ€™s home ground is Victoria Park which has a capacity of 7,856.
  9. The side are managed by Matthew Bates.
  10. Ritchie Humphreys is widely regarded as a club legend, and the versatile player made near 500 appearances for The Pools. He was also part of the most successful period in the clubโ€™s history, and was an important player in the clubโ€™s near-promotion to the Championship.
