FC Halifax Town drew for the first time this season as they drew 1-1 away against Sutton United.

Kenny Davies opened the scoring after his free-kick was deflected past Sam Johnson in goal, before a sublime effort from Dayle Southwell found its way past Jamie Butler in the Sutton goal.

Shaymen TV spoke to The Shaymen’s number 9 after the game.

Sutton sat in 9th place before kick-off despite being only 3 points behind The Shaymen in the top spot. The south London side will be looking to be near the top of the table at the end of the season, yet Southwell wasn’t fully satisfied with just the one point. At the end of the 90 minutes.

β€œI think we started a little bit slow and we grew into the game and overall we are actually disappointed to only come away with a draw. We had and created a lot of chances, we limited them to chances and I think it shows how far we’ve come to be disappointed with a draw because this is a difficult place to come.”

β€œBefore the game, you know this a tough place to come and you’d probably take a point. But, as the game unfolded, and the chances came for us, like I say we probably should be a little bit disappointed, but we can’t argue with the result and it’s a good point in the end”.

The man who signed from Guiseley has a very good scoring record throughout his career and he managed to score his 3rd goal of the season to equalise.

β€œI thought I did okay myself, maybe could’ve created a few more chances. It was hard in that heat today, it was very hot, and the boys worked very hard, but I’m pleased with the goal and managing to get us a point.”

It was a lovely struck goal by the Halifax number 9 who explains the goal to us.

β€œJordan (Preston) passed it into me, I took a touch ready to shoot with my left foot and I saw the defender stick out a leg to try and block it. So, just before I was about to shoot I decided to swivel on it and turned him, then I just hit it and hoped for the best really. Luckily it went into the bottom corner and I was very pleased with it.”

Gander Green Lane, the home of Sutton was a factor in today’s game according to Southwell after the effective Ben Tomlinson hopped off the plastic surface.

β€œI think the pitch and weather affected the game today. It’s tough on 3G like you saw, Tommo (Tomlinson) jarring his knee because the pitch is so hard. The heat didn’t help at all either. Obviously, we’re not used to this surface, it’s something new and they play on it nearly every game.”

Jamie Fullarton has clearly set his team up in a 4-2-3-1 formation for all games this season. That tacking formation is helping the front four thrive, and although Southwell has moved back, he’s still looking to help the team out wherever he can.

β€œI do set myself targets for goals at the start of the season but it’s a little bit different this season. Normally I’m playing up front, but I’ve started the season in a different role behind the striker. So obviously I’ve got to adjust and probably won’t score as many goals in that role. I’m sort of the supporting striker rather than being that main number 9 so it’s different for me. I’m still trying to score as many goals as I can while trying to assist as many as I can as well.”

β€œI’ll do any job for the team and while the boys are playing well if it means me playing just behind the striker then so be it”.

The front four have been so impressive this season. Kosylo, Tomlinson, Preston, Edwards and Southwell himself have all scored this season and Southwell explains why the lot of them are going to keep on scoring.

β€œWe’ve all got pace, we’ve all got energy and it’s lively. We like to play on the counter-attack and if there’s pace we’ve always got goals in us and that’s so enjoyable. I don’t think there’s been a game so far we haven’t scored in just showing we’ve always got a goal in us.”

The Shaymen travel across the border to face new league leaders Wrexham on Tuesday night, Southwell has his say on that game.

β€œWe’re all looking forward to that game. We know there are big crowds there, but we are up for it, we’ve had a tough game today and they’ve won again today. But we’ll be going again looking for the three points.”
