FC Halifax Town drew for the first time this season as they drew 1-1 away against Sutton United.
Kenny Davies opened the scoring after his free-kick was deflected past Sam Johnson in goal, before a sublime effort from Dayle Southwell found its way past Jamie Butler in the Sutton goal.
Shaymen TV spoke to The Shaymenβs number 9 after the game.
Sutton sat in 9th place before kick-off despite being only 3 points behind The Shaymen in the top spot. The south London side will be looking to be near the top of the table at the end of the season, yet Southwell wasnβt fully satisfied with just the one point. At the end of the 90 minutes.
βI think we started a little bit slow and we grew into the game and overall we are actually disappointed to only come away with a draw. We had and created a lot of chances, we limited them to chances and I think it shows how far weβve come to be disappointed with a draw because this is a difficult place to come.β
βBefore the game, you know this a tough place to come and youβd probably take a point. But, as the game unfolded, and the chances came for us, like I say we probably should be a little bit disappointed, but we canβt argue with the result and itβs a good point in the endβ.
The man who signed from Guiseley has a very good scoring record throughout his career and he managed to score his 3rd goal of the season to equalise.
βI thought I did okay myself, maybe couldβve created a few more chances. It was hard in that heat today, it was very hot, and the boys worked very hard, but Iβm pleased with the goal and managing to get us a point.β
It was a lovely struck goal by the Halifax number 9 who explains the goal to us.
βJordan (Preston) passed it into me, I took a touch ready to shoot with my left foot and I saw the defender stick out a leg to try and block it. So, just before I was about to shoot I decided to swivel on it and turned him, then I just hit it and hoped for the best really. Luckily it went into the bottom corner and I was very pleased with it.β
Gander Green Lane, the home of Sutton was a factor in todayβs game according to Southwell after the effective Ben Tomlinson hopped off the plastic surface.
βI think the pitch and weather affected the game today. Itβs tough on 3G like you saw, Tommo (Tomlinson) jarring his knee because the pitch is so hard. The heat didnβt help at all either. Obviously, weβre not used to this surface, itβs something new and they play on it nearly every game.β
Jamie Fullarton has clearly set his team up in a 4-2-3-1 formation for all games this season. That tacking formation is helping the front four thrive, and although Southwell has moved back, heβs still looking to help the team out wherever he can.
βI do set myself targets for goals at the start of the season but itβs a little bit different this season. Normally Iβm playing up front, but Iβve started the season in a different role behind the striker. So obviously Iβve got to adjust and probably wonβt score as many goals in that role. Iβm sort of the supporting striker rather than being that main number 9 so itβs different for me. Iβm still trying to score as many goals as I can while trying to assist as many as I can as well.β
βIβll do any job for the team and while the boys are playing well if it means me playing just behind the striker then so be itβ.
The front four have been so impressive this season. Kosylo, Tomlinson, Preston, Edwards and Southwell himself have all scored this season and Southwell explains why the lot of them are going to keep on scoring.
βWeβve all got pace, weβve all got energy and itβs lively. We like to play on the counter-attack and if thereβs pace weβve always got goals in us and thatβs so enjoyable. I donβt think thereβs been a game so far we havenβt scored in just showing weβve always got a goal in us.β
The Shaymen travel across the border to face new league leaders Wrexham on Tuesday night, Southwell has his say on that game.
βWeβre all looking forward to that game. We know there are big crowds there, but we are up for it, weβve had a tough game today and theyβve won again today. But weβll be going again looking for the three points.β
