FC Halifax Town and Wrexham face off against each other for the second successive season in the National League tomorrow night, so here’s a look at some previous encounters between the two teams…

The Shaymen and The Red Dragons’ most recent meeting was in February 2018 in the National League, a game which saw the teams share the points following a 1-1 draw at The Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham opened the scoring in the 19th minute on that day courtesy of Scott Boden, after the forward was able to nod home a Kevin Roberts cross. However, Halifax drew level just before the half time break. A Scott of our own – Scott Garner found the net with a header.

The second half saw The Shaymen have the better of it, with striker Tom Denton missing a couple of great chances. Wrexham’s Paul Rutherford was sent off late on by referee Daniel Middleton for two bookable offences.

Despite the missed opportunities, Halifax made the trip back to West Yorkshire with a well-earnt point.

In the reverse fixture of the 2017-18 season, it was again another stalemate between the two teams, culminating in a 0-0 draw.

In front of 2,356 supporters at The Shay, both teams battled hard with chances rued for either team. Both Adam Morgan and Matty Kosylo forced Wrexham’s Luke Coddington into a couple of good saves while Chris Holroyd and Alex Reid tested the palms of Sam Johnson. But as aforementioned, it was another share of the points for Halifax and Wrexham.

The two sides didn’t cross paths at all during the 2016-17 season, following Halifax’s relegation to the National League North in 2015-16.

Despite the disappointment in 2015-16, Halifax and Wrexham did meet in National League action. The first game came in North Wales in August 2015 which saw the Welsh side come out on top with a 3-1 victory.

Jamal Vidal opened the scoring for the Red Dragons early on before Dom Vose doubled their lead some minutes after. The Shaymen pulled a goal back shortly after Vose’s strike, thanks to Jordan Burrow. However, Wrexham restored their two-goal advantage in the second when Wes York scored to make it 3-1.

The reverse fixture in December 2015 saw The Shaymen avenge their loss at The Racecourse Ground as they were able to overcome Wrexham two goals to nil. A sharp first half performance from Halifax with goals from Shaun Tuton and Kingsley James helped them on their way to the three points.

A bad day for Wrexham was worsened in the closing stages when Jamal Fyfield was shown a straight red for a bad challenge.

So, it’s been an even contest between the two teams in recent times, with The Shaymen and Wrexham having a win apiece in the previous four meetings. The sides have met on fourteen occasions since 1998 in a range of competitions such as The FA Trophy, The FA Cup and The League Cup. Wrexham narrowly have the historical advantage, having won on five occasions to Halifax’s four.

Let’s hope Jamie Fullarton’s men can level up the head to head record on Tuesday night.
