Match 1: Spain v Russia

Spain finished top of their group on goal difference and they will face the host nation at 3pm today on the BBC.

Spain have failed to beat the host nation of a major tournament on their eight meetings with a host nation, so history is not on their side. They are another team who has been unimpressive so far, but could they pull off a performance like France did yesterday?

Not much was expected of Russia coming into the FIFA World Cup. They are the lowest ranked nationย in the tournament but they made it through the group stages with relative ease. What we’ve seen from Russia in this competition is that you must be switched on defensively or they will make you pay.

Spain have conceded five goals in three games so that will give the hosts a huge confidence boost that the 2010 World Cup winners are there for the taking.

Match 2: Croatia v Denmark

Croatia surprised everybody by winning all three of their group games and they are one of the most in-form teams remaining in the World Cup. They will be recalling their star players such as Ivan Rakitic, Dejan Lovren and Mario Mandzukic, who were all rested for their final group game.

The only previous time Croatia advanced past the group stage, they went on to reach the semi-final.

Denmark are also yet to taste defeat at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. There’s more good news for Denmark as William Kvist may return to the line-up after puncturing a lung in the opening match.

Both sides are evenly matched so this should make for an interesting encounter and ITV will be building up to kickoff from 6:30pm.
