It promises to be a great day of football today at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with some powerhouse nations getting their campaign underway.

Match 1:

Costa Rica take on Serbia in the first action of the day, live on ITV. The build up to kick off starts at 12:30pm with the starting whistle being blown at 1pm.

Costa Rica were the Cinderella story four years ago in Brazil. They qualified out of a tough group that included England, Italy and Uruguay. They then went on to reach the quarter final of the tournament. However, they have lost the majority of their recent international friendlies so confidence may be quite low within the Costa Rican camp.

Serbia are back at the World Cup for the first time in eight years. They had a terrific qualifying campaign where they topped their group which featured the likes of Republic of Ireland, Wales and Austria.

Many of the Serbian players, such as Aleksandr Mitrovic,ย are coming off the back of great seasons with their clubs and their has been talk about how their team spirit is quite high this year.

This game is hugely important for both nations as their group also consists of Brazil and Switzerland, so getting points on the board early is vital.

Match 2:

The second match of the day features the defending World Champions, Germany. They take on Mexico at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Kick off is at 4pm with the BBC building up to the game from 3:30pm

Germany eased through qualifying winning all ten of their games and scoringย fourty-three goals along the way. What’s even more impressive is that they only concededย four goals.

A lot has changed for Die Mannschaft in the last four years. A host of players have retired and the World Cup Finalย winning goal scorer, Mario Gotze, didn’t even make the squad for this year’s tournament.

Mexico themselves had an impressive qualifying campaign. They lost only once in their sixteen games, which came after they had already secured themselves a spot in Russia. Mexico know they are the underdogs in this contest but a positive result against the defending champions would surely be a huge statement.

Match 3:

Many people’s favourites to lift the trophy in July feature in the final match of the day. Brazil take on Switzerland, with ITV having you covered from 6:30pm.

A lot has changed since we last saw Brazil get thrashed by Germany four years ago. In this year’s squad, they have only six players with World Cup experience but it is their attacking flair that has many fans excited. With a front line of Coutinho, Willian, Gabriel Jesus and Neymar, the five-time world champions will surely try to put on a show this evening.

Switzerland are the only nation inย FIFA World Cup history to beat the eventual tournament champions in their opening game. Switzerland should be full of confidence after they drew 1-1 with Spain and beat Japan 2-0 in their World Cup warm-up games. However, they certainly have a tough task ahead of them today.
