FC Halifax Town will return to more familiar territory this week when promotion hopefuls Tranmere Rovers make the trip to West Yorkshire to pull further clear of their near rivals, and keep the pressure on table toppers, Macclesfield Town.

The Shaymen’s last game ended a good run of form, with the long trip down to Torquay proving fruitless as Jamie Reid’s second half header kept the Gulls’ slim hopes of survival alive.

Despite the defeat, Jamie Fullarton’s men are now safe from the threat of relegation and are now playing to finish as high as possible in the National League.

Tranmere, a former football league side, have won their last four games – scoring a total of 12 goals, and have almost confirmed a play-off place, barring an almighty collapse in their final four games.

Micky Mellon’s men have only lost one of their last six away games –ย  a 2-1 reverse to Boreham Wood – and their last fixture away from Prenton Park consigned Chester to an early relegation.

Town’s last five games have seen them win twice and lose twice, while their home form has been spectacular, with Fullarton’s side going unbeaten in six, with four wins and two draws.

The form table sees the Rovers come into the game second place, while Halifax are 15th with both sides have suffered two defeats in that time.

However, Tranmere are significantly less prolific away from home than at Prenton Park. They have scored just 28 goals away from home compared to the 46 they have scored in front of their own fans.

The visitors’ danger men come in the form of Andy Cook and James Norwood. Cook’s 25 goals puts him ahead of Danny Rowe in the Golden Boot race, whereas Norwood’s 19 strikes is enough to leave him in third place.

Former Manchester United midfielder Larnell Cole is a threat, while ex-EFL players, such as Andrew Mangan and Ben Tollitt, have a lot of experience and know how, which stands Rovers in good stead going into the final stretch.

Former Fleetwood Town goalkeeper, Scott Davies helped Tranmere to their 17th clean sheet of the season, with his shutout against Barrow.

The reverse fixture came back in October. Goals from captain, Matty Brown and Hull City loanee, Daniel Batty weren’t enough to prevent the hosts prevailing 4-2, with a brace by Norwood, Larnell Cole and Dylan Mottley-Henry with further strikes.
