FC Halifax Town moved nine points clear of the relegation zone after they defeated third-placed Boreham Wood 2-1 at the MBi Shay Stadium.

Matty Brown put Halifax a goal ahead at the break with a thunderous header midway through the half before Morgan Ferrier equalised just four minutes into the second period.

Mike-Fondop-Talom wonderful chipped finish restored an advantage that Town saw out until the final whistle, moving them up to 15th in the table and nine points clear of the drop zone.

Town raced out of the blocks and could easily have been two goals in front after just five minutes worth of action.

Connor Thomson broke away down the right flank before sending a cross into Ben Tomlinson but the opposite winger could put his chest to the ball and the effort was cleared.

Halifax maintained the pressure though and, less than a minute later, another opening down the right side gave Michael Duckworth the chance to set up Mike Fondop-Talom but the striker saw his effort palmed by Grant Smith.

A dominant opening quarter by the Shaymen was eventually rewarded after 20 minutes with the attack again stemming from the right wing.

Thomson won a corner down the wing before Connor Oliverโ€™s inch-perfect set-piece found the head of captain Matty Brown who nodded the ball into the top-right corner for his fourth goal of the season.

Halifax were firmly in the ascendancy by now and Fondop-Talom had another good chance when sent in behind by Tomlinson and his shot on the turn was well stopped by the legs of Grant Smith in the Boreham Wood goal.

The visitors fought back into the contest though and showed their attacking qualities with a couple of good opportunities in quick succession from Bruno Andrade after the half hour mark.

First, Andrade broke away on a counter-attack from a Halifax corner before lashing a shot just inches away from the top corner of the Town goal before the former QPR winger sent in a teasing delivery which somehow averted a touch from any of his team-mates.

Halifaxโ€™s defence defended well though as the resolute backline was able to see the goal advantage into the half-time break.

The second-half restart proved to be a continuation of how the first-period had ended with Boreham Wood continuing to threaten an equaliser.

The leveller eventually came after just four minutes of the restart as a slick move saw a sliding pass from Kieran Murtagh release Morgan Ferrier in acres of space as the striker fired the ball into the top left corner.

Halifax were stuck in their own penalty area a few minutes later as a series of corners tested their defensive capabilities but Johnson was equal to danger, punching away the crosses from wide.

After the hour mark, the Shaymen were back in front with a goal that came very much against the run of play.

A brilliant through-ball pass from full-back Michael Duckworth set Fondop-Talom in behind the defence and the striker was finally on the scoresheet as a delightful chip over the onrushing Grant Smith found the back of the net, restoring the lead.

Halifax struggled to create chances thereafter with Sam Grahamโ€™s header over from an Oliver free-kick the closest the Shaymen came to a third.

Town were strong at the back though until the finish with Matty Brownโ€™s leading the backline with some fantastic blocks, tackles and clearances from the skipper.
