Macclesfield Town: 10 Things

  1. Macclesfield Town FC was founded back in 1874 and the team were simply knows as ‘Macclesfield’.
  2. They play their home games at the Moss Rose Stadium, which can hold up to 6,355 fans. It was built and opened in 1891.
  3. Nicknamed ‘The Silkmen’. This is due to the town of Macclesfield formerly being famous for its silk mills.
  4. The bread making company Hovis originated in Macclesfield in 1886.
  5. The Silkmen have been competing in the National League since their relegation from League 2 in 2012.
  6. On 5 January 2013, Macclesfield Town beat then Championship LeadersCardiff City in the FA Cup 3rd round 2–1. This secured a 4th round spot in the tournament for the first time in their 139-year history
  7. Club cult hero John Askey is the current manager of the side. Askey played over 400 games for Macclesfield and is currently on his second spell in charge of the club.
  8. Paul Ince was player manager for The Silkmen for the 2006/07 season. He played 1 game, coming off the bench to play 5 minutes against Notts County – his final professional game. At 39 years and 196 days old, Ince became Macclesfield’s oldest ever outfield player.
  9. In the 1933–34 season, Albert Valentinescored an astounding 83 goals for The Silkmen across the season.
  10. Macclesfield Town made history whenChris Priest, a Macclesfield Town player, scored the final goal of the last millennium.
