After a rough start to 2018, this week’s edition of 10 things will be focusing on this weekend’s opponents Maidenhead.

Maidenhead United Football Club (aka The Magpies) is a semi-professional football club based in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England. They are currently members of the National League, the fifth tier of English football, and have played at York Road since 1871, making it the “oldest senior football ground continuously used by the same club”

Maidenhead Football Club was established in October 1870, with the club’s first match played on 17 December 1870 against Windsor Home Park at Bond’s Meadow.

In April 1919 Maidenhead Norfolkians merged into the club, after which the club colours were changed from black and red stripes to black and white.

Maidenhead were founder members of the Southern League in 1894, joining Division Two. They finished bottom of the division in its inaugural season and again in 1898–99 and 1899–1900, before leaving the league in 1902.

They won the West Berkshire League at the first attempt and were runners-up in 1903–04,[4] before joining the new Great Western Suburban League alongside Maidenhead Norfolkians in 1904.

The club’s record attendance of 7,920 was set for an FA Amateur Cup quarter-final against Southall on 7 March 1936 with Maidenhead winning 1–0.

Their recent edition to the club’s honours is last season’s National League Southern Division as well as the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup.

The manager, being Alan Devonshire, is managing the Magpies in his second spell. Maidenhead were the first club he’s managed since 1996, just four years after retiring from Watford in 1992. He had first left the Magpies in 2003, only to return York Road in 2015.

Devonshire also played for England, he has eight appearances to his name, unfortunately he didn’t score.

Peter Griffin is the current owner of Maidenhead. Griffin has a degree in Applied Sciences from when he graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in 2000. Since May last year, Griffin was appointed chairman of G&L Scientific Ltd. A company that’s described as “one of the most admired scientific consulting organizations”.
