A distraught Josh Wilde has described FC Halifax Town’s 4-0 defeat to Hartlepool as ‘one of the worst games’ he has been involved in.
The Shaymen travelled to Victoria Park hoping to end their winless streak in the Vanarama National League.
However, a Nicky Deverdic opener and a Liam Donnelly penalty within 7 minutes of kick off all but killed off the game early on.
Rhys Oates then put the hosts up by three, before Conor Newton added a fourth as full-time approach to end a game in which they were always second best.
‘It’s tough to take really, it’s disappointing, all of the lads are devastated,’ Wilde said.
‘I just think now you are starting to see what full time teams do. We’re part time and I think at this minute in time it is showing.
‘It’s not an excuse but all the lads have been in work today and have been up since 6, and are back in at 6 tomorrow, and it just takes it out of you.
‘These lads have probably done nothing all day prior to this, they’ve just come in fresh and I think that can make a difference as well as the extra training and the extra fitness.
‘I think at this stage of the season we are starting to see that show though.
The 25-year-old gave an honest and frank evaluation of the team performance, admitting that the defence he was part of just wasn’t at the races.
‘The two early goals killed us,’ he explained.
‘Defensively as a team we were all over the place, they just picked us off. We were not following runners when they were drawing out the defence.
‘We defend as a team and as I said, today there were goals that weren’t necessarily the defence’s fault. Other weeks they have been our fault, it is just a team game.
‘We’ve got to do as much as we can do as a team to keep the goals out.’
The left back also bemoaned the lack of consistency with the team selection.
Halifax went into the game with captain Matty Brown out after he picked up a 5th yellow card of the season, and saw Scott McManus, Connor Oliver and Harry Middleton pick up injuries throughout the encounter.
‘We have such a short turn around in games, we’re getting to the half way stage of the season and you get a few tired legs.
‘We have got a lot of injuries, suspensions, we have just never had a settled team. Garner is now out for the next game,’ he said.
‘I can’t remember the last time we had what you could call a fully fit team for [Billy Heath] to select from. It has just been like it all season.
‘There’s nothing you can do about it, it’s out of [Heath’s] hands, he has got to deal with it, some of us as players have to as well, but at the minute it isn’t good enough.
‘We’ve just got to move on as fast as we can and prepare for Saturday.’
