Following Saturday’s defeat away to Sutton United, the Shaymen have a quick turnaround to prepare for their second away trip in a row, this time to Hartlepool United tonight.

As we build up to what looks set to be an intriguing fixture, here are 10 things you may not have known about our hosts.

  1. Hartlepool United were formed 109 years ago as Hartlepools United Football Athletic Company in 1908.
  2. They are nicknamed “The Pools”, which was derived from the club’s original name. Between 1968 and 1977, the club dropped the ‘s’ and ‘united’ from their name before restoring the latter to become what they are known as today.
  3. The Pools are also sometimes known as the ‘Monkey Hangers’ after a folklore tale which says a monkey was hanged in Hartlepool as it was believed to be a French Spy. The Pools adopted this into their club as mascot, H’Angus the Monkey in 1999.
  4. In 2002 H’Angus, played by Stuart Drummond at the time, was elected mayor at the Hartlepool Council Election.
  5. Manager Craig Harrison, who was appointed over the summer of this year, featured for Middlesbrough, Preston North End and Crystal Palace in his seven year playing career.
  6. The club plays its home games at Victoria Park, which was opened in 1886.
  7. It has a capacity of 7,856, and is situated on what was an old limestone quarry.
  8. The club have spent most of their history in League’s One and Two having never been promoted out of England’s third tier.
  9. Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling was named Club President in April 2016.
  10. Along with Stelling, other famous fans of the pools include singer Meat Loaf and film director, Ridley Scott.
