FC Halifax Town goalkeeper Tom Nicholson is adamant The Shaymen will rediscover their early season form, following Townโs disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Maidstone United on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old shot-stopper couldnโt deny Joe Pigottโs early opener, before being beaten from the penalty spot in the second half by Jai Reason as Halifax slumped to a sixth straight game without a win.
Without a victory since edging to three points against Bromley in September, Nicholson says The Shaymen must return to basics before they can get back to winning ways.
โWe were disappointing throughout the game and we just need to focus on getting back to basics,โ Nicholson said.
โIf we look after each other and head into games as a cohesive unit, weโll get back to our best.โ
An electric start to Townโs debut National League campaign saw The Shaymen challenging amongst the playoff spots, and Nicholson firmly believes Halifax can shake off their October woes and rise-up the fifth-tier table.
โWeโre going through a sticky patch, but weโve shown our quality by winning against the likes of Leyton Orient away from home so we know this isnโt a permanent slide.โ
โWe let both ourselves and the fans down tonight, but we will bounce back. Youโll see a different team on Saturday against Tranmere, and weโll all be working together to turn our poor form around.
Reasonโs 61st minute spot-kick shattered The Shaymenโs hopes of mounting a late-game comeback, and the refereeโs decision to award a penalty for Matty Brownโs tackle on Zavon Hines was a disappointing one according to Nicholson.
โI thought the penalty was harsh โ Matty looked to have touched the ball first, but the referee thought otherwise.โ
A minor injury for Sam Johnson paved the way for Nicholson to make his National League debut for Halifax on Tuesday night โ an achievement the former North Ferriby keeper is fiercely proud of.
โIt was good to make my first appearance in the National League, which is something Iโm delighted about from a personal perspective โ but hopefully Sam will be ready to return to line-up at the weekend.
Ahead of The Shaymenโs trip to a resurgent Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, Nicholson affirmed that an overwhelming sense of trust and togetherness will be crucial to Townโs hopes of snapping their winless run going forwards.
โMost importantly, we just need to stick together. If we trust in each other as a team, trust in the manager โ who we certainly let down tonight – Iโm sure weโll bounce straight back and rediscover our good form from the beginning of the season.โ
