Maidstone: We Will Bounce Back

FC Halifax Town goalkeeper Tom Nicholson is adamant The Shaymen will rediscover their early season form, following Townโ€™s disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Maidstone United on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old shot-stopper couldnโ€™t deny Joe Pigottโ€™s early opener, before being beaten from the penalty spot in the second half by Jai Reason as Halifax slumped to a sixth straight game without a win.

Without a victory since edging to three points against Bromley in September, Nicholson says The Shaymen must return to basics before they can get back to winning ways.

โ€œWe were disappointing throughout the game and we just need to focus on getting back to basics,โ€ Nicholson said.

โ€œIf we look after each other and head into games as a cohesive unit, weโ€™ll get back to our best.โ€

An electric start to Townโ€™s debut National League campaign saw The Shaymen challenging amongst the playoff spots, and Nicholson firmly believes Halifax can shake off their October woes and rise-up the fifth-tier table.

โ€œWeโ€™re going through a sticky patch, but weโ€™ve shown our quality by winning against the likes of Leyton Orient away from home so we know this isnโ€™t a permanent slide.โ€

โ€œWe let both ourselves and the fans down tonight, but we will bounce back. Youโ€™ll see a different team on Saturday against Tranmere, and weโ€™ll all be working together to turn our poor form around.

Reasonโ€™s 61st minute spot-kick shattered The Shaymenโ€™s hopes of mounting a late-game comeback, and the refereeโ€™s decision to award a penalty for Matty Brownโ€™s tackle on Zavon Hines was a disappointing one according to Nicholson.

โ€œI thought the penalty was harsh โ€“ Matty looked to have touched the ball first, but the referee thought otherwise.โ€

A minor injury for Sam Johnson paved the way for Nicholson to make his National League debut for Halifax on Tuesday night โ€“ an achievement the former North Ferriby keeper is fiercely proud of.

โ€œIt was good to make my first appearance in the National League, which is something Iโ€™m delighted about from a personal perspective โ€“ but hopefully Sam will be ready to return to line-up at the weekend.
Ahead of The Shaymenโ€™s trip to a resurgent Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, Nicholson affirmed that an overwhelming sense of trust and togetherness will be crucial to Townโ€™s hopes of snapping their winless run going forwards.

โ€œMost importantly, we just need to stick together. If we trust in each other as a team, trust in the manager โ€“ who we certainly let down tonight – Iโ€™m sure weโ€™ll bounce straight back and rediscover our good form from the beginning of the season.โ€
