In the latest round of fixtures in the Vanarama National League, the Shaymen will be hosting sixth placed Wrexham in hopes of returning to the play-off positions. Let’s get to know our latest opponents: The Dragons.
- Wrexham is based in Wrexham, which is located in North Wales.
- According to the club’s formation date of 1864, it makes them the oldest club and they are also the third oldest professional football club in the world.
- Since August 2011, the Wrexham Supporters’ Trust have been owners of the club, they are now one of 19 football clubs in England that are run by fans.
- Since they were relegated from Football League Two, the Dragons have been competing in the Vanarama National League, after 87 years of consecutive membership of the Football League.
- In 1992, Wrexham pulled off a shocking upset against the reigning English champions Arsenal in the FA Cup third round. Sky Sports’ Alan Smith and Paul Merson both featured for Arsenal but they weren’t able to win the game. It was Wrexham’s very own Steve Watkin who slotted past England legend David Seaman in the closing minutes of the game to secure one of the competition’s greatest giant killings of all time.
- Wrexham’s first European tie was against FC Zurich of Switzerland in 1972, their last was played in Romania against Petrolul Ploiesti in 1995.
- In 1984, Wrexham were eligible for the European Cup Winners’ Cup due to winning the Welsh Cup. They played Porto over two rounds and managed to qualify for the second round by away goals, first leg ended 1-0 to Wrexham and then they lost 4-3 to Porto in the second leg (4-4). They unfortunately vacated the competition after the second round after losing 3-0 to Roma on aggregate.
- Wrexham’s honours include winning the Third Division title in 1977–78, the Welsh Cup a record 23 times, the Football League Trophy in 2005 at the Millennium Stadium and the FA Trophy in 2013 at Wembley Stadium. Wrexham are also record winners of the short-lived FAW Premier Cup, winning it five times out of the 11 years of its tenure, participating against fellow Welsh clubs such as Cardiff City, Swansea City and Newport County.
- Wrexham’s home stadium, the Racecourse Ground, is the world’s oldest international stadium that still continues to host international games. The record attendance at the ground was set in 1957, when Wrexham hosted a match against Manchester Unitedin front of 36,445 spectators.
- As of May 2015, the club has 4,129 adult members and joint owners.
