Following their convincing 3-0 victory over Leyton Orient on Tuesday night, which saw Town go second in the Vanarama National League standings, there is little time to prepare as the Shaymen face their second, long away trip of the week, this time to Dagenham and Redbridge.
Goals from Adam Morgan, Tom Denton and Matty Kosylo made for a successful night down in London, as the Shaymen continued their unbeaten run away from home. Something that they will look to add to this coming weekend.
Considering this, here are ten things you may not have known about our hosts:
- The Daggers are celebrating their 25th year as a club this year, following the merging of Dagenham FC and Redbridge Forest in 1992.
- The decision to merge the two clubs was made due to both outfits suffering from declining attendances, therefore bringing the two together allowed the newly formed side to function healthily with an expanded fan base.
- The traditional home colours of Dagenham and Redbridge, blue and red, are also a representation of the two clubs merging. Dagenham FC had blue home kits, whereas Redbridge Forest wore red.
- After spending thirteen years in non-league, the Daggers earned promotion to the football league for the first time at the end of the 2006/07 season. Following a two-way battle with Oxford United, they were crowned Conference Champions under Manager John Still’s control.
- Dagenham spent three seasons in League Two before gaining promotion to League One in 2010. They finished seventh in the League Two standings, going on to beat Rotherham United 3-2 in the play-off final, and make history as they entered England’s third tier for the first time.
- However, the Daggers were only able to spend the one season in League One. Come May 2011, they were relegated in 21st place, just one-point Walsall in 20th.
- Manager John Still has spent three separate spells in charge of Dagenham and Redbridge since their formation. Still took charge for the first two years of the club’s existence between 1992 and 1994 then oversaw their promotions to the Football League and League One between 2004 and 2013. He is currently into his second full season of his third spell in charge of the Daggers, taking over from Wayne Burnett who was sacked in December 2015.
- After leaving Dagenham for Luton Town in 2013, Still went on to win the Conference Premier with the Hatters, making him the only manager to win promotion out of non-league with three different clubs (Maidstone United, Dagenham and Redbridge and Luton Town).
- Dagenham play their home games at Victoria Road, known as the Chigwell Construction Stadium for sponsorship reasons, which is currently celebrating its 100th year in use as a football ground. After its opening in 1917, it was used by the Sterling Works side as their factory was situated alongside it.
- And finally, Daggers goalkeeper Elliot Justham found himself trending on social media in October last year following an away game against Forest Green Rovers. The home fans behind Justham’ S goal began to label the shot stopper as “a poor Tesco sandwich”, or words to that effect, due to his unique last name.
