Saturday’s hero Sam Johnson believes defence solidity will be the key to Halifax’s success this campaign moving forward.
The 24 year-old pulled off two massive saves in the dying minutes against Chester to earn Town an important away point early in the season and he believes that staying as organised at the back as they did on Saturday will be vital this season in picking up important points
“Defensively I think really good, Browny and the back four superb again today so if we can keep that going and hopefully we can nick a few goals”
“We’ve got a good foundation, good solid back five I think so hopefully we can kick on.”
Although Town haven’t scored a goal in their first three games, Johnson isn’t worried and believes the side just needs more fortune going forward.
“I think we’ve been unlucky today, crossbar and stuff so I’m sure they’ll come.
We’re going to score goals eventually, we’ve just been a bit unlucky I think so hopefully that luck will come in the last few games of the season”
The former Port Vale stopper had a superb game between the sticks for Town, managing to keep the Chester forwards at bay especially in the final moments of the game, as he dived low to keep out an effort from Jordan Chappell in the 88th minute.
Yet only a minute later he bettered that with a phenomenal fingertip save to deny Akintunde from scoring the winner with a curling shot that was destined for the top corner and Johnson believes games like this are always a massive lift.
“Well you make big saves in big moments like that, it gives you a massive confidence boost going into the next few games and I’ve pulled out some good saves in the last couple of games so hopefully that continues.”
The result against Chester means back to back clean sheets for Town after the stalemate against Barrow on Tuesday night and believes that the side caused Chester some problems but a draw was probably the right result.
“Probably a fair result looking back on things, I thought we played pretty well first half, kept the ball down. The wind didn’t make it a great spectacle probably in the second half, everything was running through to the keeper so it was quite a difficult one”
Johnson will now be looking forward to the game on Tuesday against Dover Athletic and hoping him and his defence can stay tight and look to keep another clean sheet as this league campaign begins to take shape.
